"SADLER'S WELLS"

This area & its surroundings has such a long & rich history that continues into the present. It is all connected and has similar themes still running through it.

Being a "destination", Theatre, Ballet, performance and even "Water" are some of the main themes.

Dame Alicia Markova was born & raised in Finsbury Park at the turn of the 20th Century, going on to be a major part of the Matcham Company designed Sadler's Wells Theatre rebuild & revival of the 1930's.

In the late 1600's, just after the New River had been created, in a spot near Clerkenwell, a man named "Sadler" discovered a mineral spring.

He found a couple more, got it tested and established the Wells he had made as a spa, pleasure gardens and destination to take the waters in. In the 1680's he had also added a Theatre.

This Theatre has gone on to have 6 incarnations and today is well renowned as the Sadler's Wells Theatre & Dance Company.

Of course this part of Islington just happens to be part of what was "Finsbury" too!!

It was in 1869 when Finsbury Park was open, extending the ancient "Finsbury" name to what we now know as Finsbury Park today.

Pictured is an 18th Century print of Sadler's Well. Currently on display in "Thirst" ending very soon, at the Wellcome Collection

Finsbury Park even has a great Dance Studio continuing these mighty roots of Dame Markova.......
