POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I’ve been mentoring some artists in computer programming as a Programming Artist in Residence (PAiR) at @the_new_gallery ! It was such a pleasure to get to work with @mantismei on 家電是家人 (Machines to Love)! It was a super cool project and it turned out amazing! We spent a lot of time on this letter writing component, so I hope you write a letter to an appliance you love! 💜 Check out the site from the New Gallery site or machines2love.neocities.org 🐛🐛🐛

And our final artist spotlight!

Mantis

Sleep Too Much! (2024)

12x16in, edition of 10, $40.

Mantis is a beautiful baby.

Baby is interested in personhood/anthropomorphism/domestication as a basic requirement for empathy. In this context, Baby explores the urge to tame and make invisible those that do not fit this criteria.

Materials that can evoke an intimacy (or, the opportunity of intimacy) with viewers and participants are used. In the past, keychains, dog collars, websites, steel, simple and home electronics were used in conversation with fruit, flowers, dogs, handwritten letters, funerals, birthdays, and heart shaped stickers.

This print sold out on our opening night! But there are so many others to grab this week; the last day of our fundraiser is this Friday, March 14th! Come by in person or check it out online while you can!

Thank you everyone for your support during this fundraiser 🦋

ANNOUNCING OUR NEXT STUDIO RESIDENT ✨

Mantis Mei @mantismei is our next studio resident taking part in our new programming model which incorporates a three month long studio residency, and an exhibition following; highlighting process and presentation. We’ll be sharing Mantis' work and process throughout their residency, until the beginning of July.

Mantis is three oranges in a trenchcoat.

Mantis is also a Mohkinstsis/Calgary based artist working in sculpture, performance, and installation. They are currently exploring the specificity in the invention of breeds and hybrids in entities such as pets, fruit, symbols and typography. A Maltese puppy, a Cosmic Crisp apple, the Jokerman font–all work harder than the hammer that acts as an extension of the arm.

They are very grateful to have shown in artist-run centres in the city such as Stride Gallery, The New Gallery, The Bows, and EMMEDIA. They are currently working towards a BFA in Sculpture at the Alberta University of the Arts.

Visit the link in our bio for more info on Mantis and their residency! 🍊
