MOKOMOKAI INTERVIEW: I don’t know why I’ve ended up being more interested in NZ Music since I’ve left the country, maybe someone needs to jab me for that. But, I’m here and I love the new appreciation I’m finding for the waiata of my home.

@mokomokaiofficial , if you’re not familiar, are rap trio from Aotearoa comprised of Manu, Dusty, and Ghos.

Their music draws heavy from West Coast Rap, Soul, RnB, and Māoritonga (Māori Culture). All of this culminates to tracks that can range from gangster rap on songs like ROOFRACKS (feat. Brandn Shiraz), songs about their roots like GET OUT (feat. The Hongi Slinger), or songs about making love like No Reason.

Over the ditch in Brisbane I met up with MOKOMOKAI just a little past Fortitude Valley in New Farm at the Himalayan cafe. A Nepalese BYO spot that could easily find a home on Dominion road in my opinion. Over a couple XXXX’s, curry, and questionable jokes, we got to know each other a bit better.

Which set up for a mean chat about the meaning, or lack, of their music, their collaborators, inspirations and NRL Grand final guesses.

Shoutout @kenny_sterling_ for helping set this up and take some pics 📸 another one for @bigsound bringing us together!

The Marine Blue Social Club

This record wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the musicians that entrusted in the vision, the ideas and the concept of this project. It’s an honour to work alongside you. Massive mihi to everyone that contributed their time and energy into this work. Forever grateful.

Māori myth is WILD like the main dude is a anamorphic half man half god wizard running round doing all type of crazy heroic shit with a piece of his granfathers skeleton?!
And we grew up with these stories, way before Dwayne Da Rock Johnson, THIS was Maui.
What were we even doing reading these books in preschool? the still birth, the jaw bone, the underworld, the sun, the fish, Mahuika.
I remember the feeling something so deep & shadow & real & unreal and the BEAUTY & the ART and that’s still the feeling & I recognize my blessing to have been raised around this culture & these people.
My heritage is black America but my experience of it growing up was pop culture & it was fun but I couldn’t relate in any real meaningful way. Māori/polynesian culture filled these gaps for me, the community, the ways, the art, the song, the connection.
So when my brother @og.dusty hit me to do a joint with these two modern day Māori wizards @troykingi and @manu2much this is what came up. And to express in a meaningful way through hip hop, the language of my people, its full circle & for sure the almighty at work.
