We’re proud to have collaborated with Museo Franz Mayer @museofranzmayer on Biodiseño Mx: Territorios vivos, the first exhibition dedicated to biodesign in Mexico.

The exhibition displays were created using POLYROCA in Serene Blue and White.

For an exhibition centered on rethinking how we design, produce, and coexist with the world around us, using POLYROCA, a circular material, throughout the exhibition design felt especially meaningful.

Thank you to Taina Campos (@tainacampos.design), curator, and Manuel Díaz Tufinio (@manusaurs), exhibition designer, for inviting New Fibers to be part of this project.

🩷 1,500 TIMES THANK YOU 🩷

🔥 The 20th edition of Cinemaissí attracted 1,500 visitors, breaking its all-time attendance record.

🌽 We showed you 13 fresh, thought-provoking, and moving Latin American films. Six screenings sold out, while the rest also played to full audiences.

🎬 Among the audience favourites were the Colombian award-winning tragicomedy A Poet and the Mexican The Devil Smokes, which blurs the line between reality and dark imagination.

🔎 We also made history screening a film with Finnish subtitles for the first time in the festival's history. The Mole Agent delighted audiences both in Helsinki and Oulu, where we, together with Oulu-Matagalpa-ystävyysseura and Oulun Elokuvakeskus, hosted a successful side event to a full house.

💡 On our core values is to foster dialogue through film. Thus, we organised two conversations, one around The Ivy focusing on trauma and healing, and another around Toroboro: The Name of the Plants, discussing the ethical considerations of doing research with Indigenous communities. Both films and discussions drew strong interest, with Toroboro screening to a sold-out theatre.

📍 The 20th anniversary edition of Cinemaissí took place at Caisa Cultural Center, Kino Engel, Cinema Orion, Gilda Cinema, and Kino Konepaja from 22–26 October 2025.

✨ The record-breaking anniversary edition is a testament to the strong interest in Latin American cinema in Finland, and the need for community built around films.

🥰 We extend heartfelt thanks to all our collaborators, sponsors, volunteers, and audience members who made this anniversary year unforgettable.

This year, once again, we have two fantastic post-screening conversations that are sure to offer you deeper insights! 🤩

🍂 WORKING IN INDIGENOUS TERRITORIES IN LATIN AMERICA: DISCUSSION WITH NATHALY PINTO AND MANUEL DÍAZ TUFINIO 🍂

🕒 26.10. at 19–19:30
📍 Caisa
🎬 After the screening of TOROBORO

Maija Repo (University of Eastern Finland) discusses with Nathaly Pinto and Manuel Díaz Tufinio on their experiences and ethical considerations of doing research with Indigenous communities in Latin America. Nathaly and Manuel will reflect on what it means to work within Anglo-European scientific contexts while collaborating with Indigenous communities, exploring what can be learned from and with plants in relation to history, culture, and the sustainment of Indigenous livelihoods. They will also discuss the possibilities and limits of art as a means of raising eco-political awareness.

🗣 Nathaly Pinto is a design researcher at Aalto University’s Department of Design (Finland) and an adjunct professor at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador. Her work builds on participatory design, using visual collective knowledge-building methods and approaches that challenge extractive research practices, especially in collaboration with Indigenous communities. She currently works with Indigenous youth and organizations in the Ecuadorian Amazon, co-designing visual devices that strengthen identity and support politicized spaces for dialogue and learning within ongoing Indigenous resistance processes.

🗣 Manuel Díaz Tufinio is a Mexican product designer with an MA in Creative Sustainability from Aalto University. He has specialised in the conceptualisation and production of objects with artisan communities. His work focuses on researching and fostering the biocultural diversity of his home country through design.

🌏 The Creative Sustainability Grad Show 2025 presents 10 multidisciplinary projects that bring about not only questions, but open up new imaginaries of living more consciously in this world.

🌾Manuel Diaz Tufinio´s (@manusaurs) project “Reductio ad lermaense” is part of the Creative Sustainability Grad Show. 🌿

The Ciénegas del Lerma is a wetland in Mexico of which 89% has been lost due to human activities. Industrial pollution and water extraction have threatened local species as well as centuries-old traditions of bulrush weaving. Local artisans consider bulrush (Typha latifolia) unsuitable for weaving, as the deterioration of the ecosystem has affected these aquatic plants, but they continue to expand, becoming an invasive species.

Reductio ad lermaense is a collection of three bags that evidences the decline in the Lerma wetlands from 1870 to 2025, inspired by the region's traditional crafts by creating a bio-based material derived from bulrush. Typha's material presence seeks to contextualise its invasive behaviour in the lagoon while serving as an opportunity to open imaginaries of how this plant can lose its "useless" perception in San Pedro Tultepec.

Manuel (he/him) is a Mexican product designer / researcher working at the intersections of ecology, history, and design. He has worked at EWE Studio, txt.ure, Archivo Diseño y Arquitectura , and has collaborated for the Migrant Ecologies Projects, LABCDMX , AD Mexico, , among other clients.

📆 On view until 6 October 2025 in the K Corridor, Väre building on Aalto campus.

Reposting these above posters and below copy writings both from dear @pomatoes__0_0 !

I’m truly honoured to be part of Tropical Lab 2025, an international art camp hosted by LASALLE College of the Arts that brings together 26 artists, master’s and PhD candidates, from institutions around the world.

This year’s theme, “Service,” shaped our shared journey over two intensive and inspiring weeks in Singapore. Through the programme led by Milenko Prvački, we engaged in workshops, seminars, and collaborative experiences that challenged us to reflect on what service means in our practices, our communities, and within the wider cultural landscape.

Now that Tropical Lab has come to a close, we’re excited to share the incredible and diverse works that have emerged from this exploration. We warmly invite you to experience the outcomes of this collective inquiry - 26 unique artistic responses to the idea of Service.

By ty: Looking back to such beautiful memories and experiences makes me feel emotional, thank you to each wonderful creative soul that I met and became friends with. Sending love truthfully.🤍

Thank you @calarts.artschool for electing me, thank you @tropical_lab_ for a wonderful experience in Singapore, @milenkoprvacki (love and respect 🫡 forever for saying I’m always happy), @lasallesingapore , Sureni, @rightpersonlah @narysan_ for taking care of us!

Tropical Lab 19 Exhibition will be open until August 30th.
Go see and sit with these works while you still can!

I can’t say thank you enough to @tropical_lab_ @lasallesingapore @milenkoprvacki @tamaresgoh @surenisalgadoe for providing this uniquely extraordinary environment for artists and for guiding us with the theme of service.

This seemingly simple word opened itself and seeped into our hearts.
Service is everywhere from the hands that’s cook, to the cleaning professionals, the caregivers, the under appreciated labor of women, spiritual devotion, the unseen support systems, the ghosts of grief, and most importantly the care we extend toward ourselves and others. By embodying this word we were able to create a community and a family. We exchanged our knowledge, cultures, craft, and fostered an environment of open hearted collaboration. This care and extension of self to others is more important now than ever. It is so important that we show up, create spaces for and support each other. I hope to continue letting this theme influence my practice and my life. Hopefully we can make this world a little bit better of a place by being mindful of the service happening all around us and finding ways to reciprocate.

I am so so proud to share my work with this group of exceptional artists!

Thank you everyone
