In hindsight, filmmaking always feels like a miracle — a mirage that appears and then evaporates, leaving nothing more than an oasis of half-drunk water bottles and a hard-drive’s worth of hopes and dreams. It has always struck me as sad that in this medium so defined by permanence, most never experience the magical ephemerality of production; a fleeting, communal act of creativity, craft, and hope.

Last weekend, exactly one month before I leave Los Angeles for NYC after fourteen years of calling it home, I gathered some friends and collaborators to make my short film GUARDIAN, a script originally developed with my LA theatre company @thepublicassembly. In 48-hours we built, shot, and struck, creating an entirely mirrored set within the abandoned offices we had been generously loaned as our studio. So many friends came through across those days, to help hang mirrors, paint panels, or share thoughts. So many moments of surprise and connection, ingenuity and exhaustion, challenge and triumph… and 2am U-Haul key hand-offs. And now I feel like Dorothy at the end of the movie, looking up at my loved ones: “And you were there, and you were there, and you were there…”

I cannot wait for you to see the film. I cannot wait to see it myself. Who knows what it may be, but for now we have last weekend. As my friend @colinwinnette, with whom I collaborated on the script, wrote yesterday, “It was a reminder of how good and essential it can feel to make things with other people. To have the thought and see it through. It can be hard to know what to do with myself these days, but on weekends like this last one, there’s no question. You help each other. You test your limits. You see what you can do.”

Much more to follow, but for now a huge thank you to everyone involved with GUARDIAN. It is both completely over, and only just beginning. Let’s see what we can do.
