International African Diaspora Dance Traditions Conference

Meet the Presenters:

Founded in Montréal in 1973 by Haitian immigrants, Mapou Ginen is one of Canada’s longest-standing traditional Haitian dance troupes, dedicated to preserving and transmitting ancestral practices through dance, drumming, and song. Named after the sacred mapou tree and “Ginen,” evoking African roots, the troupe has become a cultural beacon, sharing its work across Canada and internationally while connecting generations to their heritage. Now in its third generation, Mapou Ginen continues to honor and evolve Haitian traditions after more than 50 years.

About the Work:
An immersive, participatory workshop on Haitian traditional dance and music, led by dancers and master drummers, exploring the connections between rhythm, environment, and ancestral knowledge through movement, storytelling, and cultural exchange.

Photo 1: Led by our Artistic Director, this Konbit dance class invites participants to move with Maskawon, a l Haitian dance rhythm.

Photo 2: Participants come together to dance Yanvalou in a circle, guided by the energy of live Haitian drumming.
