Meet our guest speaker Maritza Argueta!
@mar1tza1
A senior social work major concentrating in child welfare at Medgar Evers College, where I serve as president of the Student Government Association. My goal is to serve, unite, and engage the student body; this commitment started long before this role. I’ve also served as president of SHADES (Sisters Having a Definite Excellent Strategy) and of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. From student clubs to sports teams, I’ve built relationships across campus, and I help anyone I can.

Join us on October 24th 9AM-3PM!

More than a Moment
Mommas cry
Sirens ring
Pain so deep
Revenge sings

Lines blurred
Yet seen
Feels Impossible to reach
False difference between you n’ me
That gets between

Instant gratification
False promise
Lack of hope
Soulless bodies yearn
For a line of cope

Misinterpreting control
Blinded by the American dream
Intoxicated by satisfaction
Abuse becomes more powerful than action
Silence cancels all factors

A message to all the artists, creatives, fashion heads, story tellers, youth, and people of color: History books don’t tell the whole story. Art can try to paint the full picture. Music allows the ancestors to sooth the soul. Institutional racism has been strategically built. But it’s not impossible to make crumble and fall. Things take time. The people need to be well informed and not divided. Don’t let this be another message that gets picked up and let down. Each person has the ability to show up to the movement as their true authentic self.

This is more than a moment. More than a movement. It’s a collection of the past, present, and future. Art is people. It’s culture. Resources. Livelihood. Community. The people before us fought for it. But we must maintain it and make it better. People is power. Resilience. Intersectionality. Creativity. Freedom. So how will you represent your history, community, and the you that you inspire to be? When you look in the mirror, will you see the person that you say you are? Come, get into some good trouble. Love from the Visualz❤️‍🩹 #Trillzsaint #Five #LLTAYG

Being a part of a team is what I miss most about being an athlete — you rise together, you fall together.

But you always do it together.

On Saturday, I had the joy of witnessing and chronicling history for @medgareverscollege — my adopted school that still has my heart because of its incredible students.

In this first photo, you’ll find 17 of the 39 @cunyac Championships outdoor titles earned at @icahnstadiumnyc — @http.brii__ with 10 gold medals on her own, @reekz_246 with four (including three meet records) and @itsn0tmari taking the three jumps (high, long and triple).

And they supported each other til the very end. This photo came after the last event ended, some six hours of effort that a layman could never fathom putting themselves through.

Then there was @woow_kool taking the steeplechase (imagine having the jump into water every lap and still dust the field), with teammates @__jenn_7 and @nae_dior22 withstanding one of track’s most grueling tests.

@pharellllitoo told me mid-meet that everything was about team on this day — but the freshman still took home two golds. He says better times are to come.

After @chris_nell999 took the pole vault title the past two seasons, basketball-turned-track star Ahmed Toure kept the title in Cougar Town.

I’m indebted to @coach_hugh_esq for trusting me to tag along with his teams over the past two years, allowing me access to some of the city’s most incredible talent — on and off the track.

I’m already counting down the days until fall season.

From campus to the court, Martizia is making it all work.

With support from her ASAP advisor, OMNY rides, and space to grow as a student leader, she’s able to focus on what matters school, volleyball 🏐, and her future.

You can do it too — and we’re here to help.

Proud is an understatement.

Perseverance doesn’t cut it either.

Most of us don’t know the commitment and sacrifice it takes to win a single championship.

Try to go back-to-back-to-back.

These medgareverscougars did that.

To have the honor and responsibility of documenting their history is not something I take lightly.

These student-athletes deserve every ounce of it.

I’ve watched them cry and bleed in the name of being a Cougar.

There is no grey area when it comes to their dedication.

It’s black & white.

On the 100th day of the 2025, (Wednesday, April 9, 2025), Medgar Evers College hosted the inaugural Daughters of the Legacy Program, a historic event ahead of the 100th birth commemorations of Medgar Wiley Evers and El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X).

We extend deep gratitude to the exemplary Brooklyn Recovery Corps for this platform. This inaugural program was introduced and spearheaded by Mr. Peter Holoman, Director of the Office of Advancement & Strategic Initiatives at MEC and Director of the Brooklyn Recovery Corps.

We were profoundly moved by the conversation featuring Mrs. Reena Evers-Everette and Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz, the esteemed daughters of Civil Rights legends. The dialogue, guided by Mr. Lance Wheeler, offered profound wisdom on selfless service and endurance, affirming our collective authority to demand change and the desire to shine a light on the truth.

The Chapter was proud to participate formally, with President James Viafara and student Nadisha Hall presenting Awards of Honor. NAACP Medgar Evers College Chapter was an essential collaborator in this momentous occasion, and we are profoundly thankful to the Office of Advancement & Strategic Initiatives for making our Chapter central to this historic event.

Today, we run at Van Cortlandt Park.

Everyday, we run for each other.

We will hold each other accountable, on and off the track, prioritizing our responsibility to one another.

That’s the Cougar Contract.

Together, we take on the world.
