State 47/50. Marathon #86. Greenbrier River Marathon, West Virginia. Recap.

The easiest course, perfect weather, all my fuel and hydration with me, and the right clothes for the route, weather, and terrain. Everything was lined up for a great race… except my mind: And before anyone asks about the KT Tape: my knees are fine. I just love it! If only I could’ve taped my attitude into place, too.

By mile 1, I already wanted to quit. What followed was a constant mental battle unlike anything I’d experienced in my previous 85 marathons.

Honestly, one of my biggest motivations to finish was knowing I wouldn’t have to come back to check off this state: no cell service, winding roads that made me carsick, and an airport almost three hours away. My brain’s best pep talk was, “Finish now so we don’t have to do this trip again!”

The race itself was beautiful, and I absolutely recommend it. The hardest part was being inside my own head. From mile 1, I hated how I felt and how hard I was being on myself.

Has anyone else had a race where everything around you was right, but mentally you wanted out from the very beginning? I know myself as a runner, which is why this caught me so off guard.

The urge to quit stayed with me, but I kept going all the way to the finish.

West Virginia. State 47: checked.

DAMN, it was a good day! 🔥💙💛

Had a goal in mind, but honestly, no expectations. Life has been in the fast lane lately and training hasn’t been 💯 dialed in. I’ll take it! 🙌
