A magical week learning to carve Carrara marble in Pietrasanta with @marble.projects, under the guidance of @kevinfrancisgraystudio and his team. Coming from clay, working with marble felt like learning to think in reverse — instead of growing something from the bottom, slowly uncovering it from the surface of the stone. Thank you to the whole team for sharing your knowledge, generosity and beautiful lunches, and to the brilliant group of artists I got to share the week with 🤍@isamayaffrench @clementinekeithroach @neal_camilleri @sarahillenberger Feeling like there is no other way than to continue working with marble.

CUORE DI BUE Bianco di Carrara Marble 55x35x33 Price on Request 🍅 My first carved marble sculpture is finished. Thanks to the most amazing workshop I was invited to by @marble.projects who got me even more hooked with this iconic stone. The reference was a ripe oxheart tomato my neighbour Tomasso grows in his garden and regularily shares. Generousity and Kindness is what keeps me coming back this paradise between the marble mountains and the mediterranean sea. #marble #amore #pomodoro

I went to Pietrasanta and picked a fight with a block of Rosa portogallo @marble.projects . A week of carving, experimenting, learning, and producing an unreasonable amount of dust. Big thank you to @kevinfrancisgraystudio for sharing his knowledge and guiding us through the madness, and to everyone at @marble.projects for making it such a brilliant week 💖 @kevinfrancisgraystudio @taramoorephoto @matteozeniscultore @jessicaaielpo @rubensuryo @davidrobertfenwick @sarahillenberger @astridspechtseeberg @isamayaffrench @clementinekeithroach

"It's about seeing beauty in nature...the way life transforms from one place to another." -Dominic van der Merwe I had the pleasure to make this video documenting the work of sculptor Dominic van der Merwe @domvdm_formd who journeyed to Pietrasanta from Australia to create "Exhale." The making of Exhale was facilitated by the artisans @kevinfrancisgraystudio and @marble.projects. We also visited Le Cave di Marmo di Levigliani. Music credit: Schrödinger 3 (Audio Network), by David O'Brien & Paul Clarvis.

This is the slow part. Running a hand over every curve, removing tiny undulations and imperfections that only the hand can find. One pass at a time, until the sculpture finally settles. #pietrasanta #carraramarble #sculpture #architecturalart #exhale

Kevin Francis Gray is a globally-renowned sculptor who lives and works in Canterbury and London but also maintains a vibrant studio practice in Pietrasanta, where he comes periodically to work. His company, Marble Projects @marble.projects, offers stone carving services to emerging and established sculptors. We filmed Kevin showing us some of his work after we recorded his podcast, which you can hear at materiallyspeaking.com/episodes/kevin-francis-gray or any podcast player. KEVIN: This is a striding youth. This is a piece of was done in nero marquina and from one block. And this is kind of like what I was talking about with the Son Dancing piece. This arrogance and confidence of youth. I was trying to depict this young boy walking out of the block, literally leaving the block, and they just got this sort of confidence. But also I was trying to very abstractly and very, very minimally with gesture. This is Italian Boy. This is a young Italian man I met in London. This is bearded man. This was, I believe his name was Howard. He was a portrait. He was like no hair and beard. And very like quite a strong character. This is Samuel. Do you want to look at Samuel? KEVIN: So this is the plaster from which this is a portrait. This is one of the portraits from the from the Ten Heroes series. And this is the plaster of Samuel Samuel Beckett. So you can see I still use the motif of the crescent. I don't know if you can see that of the moon. And then this is his profile. You can see his beautiful nose and his lips and his big chin. And then this would be an eye. And there's he always had. He was always, like, wrinkled forehead and slightly annoyed with the world. MIKE: Did he ever smile? KEVIN:Probably never. Definitely no depiction, nothing smiling. But you can see it's very abstract. But then you just start to notice, like you have these beautiful big ears, which were really gorgeous. So you can see his ears here. So you can just start to see little, little vignettes, little traces of his actual portrait. #MateriallySpeaking #KevinFrancisGray #ContemporarySculpture #MarbleSculpture #Pietrasanta #ContemporaryArt #Sculptor #ArtPodcast

Such immense gratitude to experience Exhale being lifted into its final position today in Pietrasanta, in the incredibly skilled hands of the team at @marble.projects. This reel captures only a few moments from a day spent working alongside artist @kevinfrancisgraystudio and the Marble Projects team as we wrestled with mass, balance and geometry in pursuit of the final position. To spend time amongst artists, makers and craftspeople from around the world in this remarkable town is something I have imagined for a long time. Today that vision became reality. Cup full. #pietrasanta #carraramarble #sculpture #architecturalart #exhale
