A cozy Syrah evening with friends, where it quickly became clear which wines have room for improvement, where you have very good wines of the middle class to upper class and where the world class begins. In this tasting world class came exclusively from the Northern Rhône. You only had to ask yourself whether you saw the 2006 Clape Cornas or the 2006 Allemand further ahead. 1999 Guigal Côte Rôtie was also a wonderful wine. Likewise the Jamet Côte Rôtie Fructus Voluptas developed to the rather younger consumption. Then came for me Richeaume with the 2010 Les Terrasses, which could have benefited from a few more years of cellar maturity, but still impressed me very much. Likewise, the Odysseus pair of Bodegas Puig Priorat. Overall, a very nice performance show of this beloved grape variety.

Part 1 of 2: Yesterday I put together an Italian wine evening of 12 wines for friends. Except for the two sweet wines, it was mostly 2011s and a few 2010s. So at least 10 years old. Overall, it was a very mixed evening with clearly more lows than highs. Overall, most of the wines seemed too broad, too sweet and often scratchy and unharmonious. Above all, it quickly became obvious that these wines are best consumed only with food and are much less fun solo. Now 2011 was certainly a difficult year, especially in the north.

The 2011 Caroline von Pranzegg is probably past its best. The Caroline always seems very reductive at the beginning, yesterday it was rather oxidative with quite a lot of extract and tannin. I quite liked the wine, but as a soloist, the cuvée of Chardonnay, Viognier, Manzoni bianco and Sauvignon Blanc was too powerful, to which the 14.5% vol. also contributed. The 2011 Vie di Romans had cork and since I only had a single bottle, I then had the 2010 Vie di Romans Rive Alte Chardonnay. The wine did not give the impression of a Chardonnay at all. It tasted more like aromatic varieties like Sauvignon Blanc or Malvasia with lots of fruit. It also seemed rather ponderous and not very fresh.

In contrast, the 2011 Ageno from the La Stoppa winery in Emilia was much fresher and above all more exciting. A cuvée of
90 % Malvasia di Candia Aromatica 90% with Ortrugo & Trebbiano, fermented on the skins for four months, a fantastically diverse aromatic wine from lots of flowers to candied and dried fruits to medicinal notes of cough syrup, yet bone dry on the palate with silky acidity, lots of extract and good length.

The 2011 Quirein from Pranzegg showed the depth and velvetiness of the Lagrein variety, the ripe black fruit, but also quite a lot of volatile acidity or glue notes, which became stronger and stronger with warmth and were no fun. The 2011 Nervi Gattinara Valferana did not spoil with drinkability either. The Nebbiolo seemed rather broad, the tannin still rough and the wine not at all balanced.
