🗣️Quotes from Eriq La Salle that resonated heavily with me yesterday ✨

✍🏾 Take defeat and use it as empowerment

✍🏾 Writing is empowering because you don’t need anyone’s permission to do it

✍🏾 Failure is a delayed blessing

You may know him from his powerful performance as Dr. Peter Benton from the NBC medical drama ER, which earned him 3 NAACP image awards, Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, the memorable and unforgettable Darryl Denks in Coming to America, a Director and Producer of some of our favorite shows like Law & Order, Chicago PD, On Call… and OF COURSE you might even know him from his Martyr Maker book series!!

Yesterday, I had the amazing opportunity to meet @eriqlasalle who is currently on tour for his latest thriller, Laws of Solomon, hosted by @bncliftonons, for a discussion, with @kellyekell an award-winning author whose novels have been named to TIMES Magazine’s 100 Best Mystery & Thrillers of All Time, and hear his story from writer to actor, director and producer, and author! I left truly inspired and in awe of his journey and the lasting legacy he carved out during his career.

Thank you so much @bncliftoncommons for the opportunity to see Eriq La Salles and Kellye Garrett!

A little art. A little intrigue. A whole lot of bookish fun. 🖼️🔎📚

Last night I went to Art, Intrigue, & After Hours with @apt105books celebrating @lucywtagoe and "To Catch a Sinner", and this was SO much more than your typical author event.

We got an author conversation, an interactive mystery, a book signing, and a room full of people who love books. Basically, my kind of night. 😂

I loved getting to chat with Lucy and hear more about the story, and I finally got to meet @siswhatyoureading_ in person. I also got to hug on @brittwonthepage , caught up with some of my fellow Plotties from @plottwistsandprosecco_ , and somehow left with a new bookish friend, @carlavlewis . 💜

And shoutout to @marciereadseverything for mentioning this event to me because I am SO glad I went.

There is just something about being in a room full of readers, authors, and book people that makes me ridiculously happy. More nights like this, please. 🥹

Now I have "To Catch a Sinner" in my hands and after spending the night playing detective in Lucy’s world… obviously I need to read it. 😂🔎

Some conversations meet you exactly where you are.

Our discussion of Your X Factors was such a needed reminder that growth is not always about adding another habit, responsibility, title, meeting, or commitment. Sometimes the real work is deciding what needs to go.

Dr. Paulette Evans challenged us to think differently about purposeful purging, boundaries, burnout, and the ways women keep carrying more simply because we can. One question from the conversation has stayed with me:

Will this give me a positive return on my time, energy, peace, happiness, or joy?

Because just because you can carry it does not mean you should.

Thank you to Dr. Paulette Evans for such an honest, practical, and affirming conversation. Thank you to Tiffany Alston, the Chief Librarian, for welcoming us into the library and helping create space for conversations like this.

And a very special thank you to my book club friend Marcie for being there, asking thoughtful questions, and adding so much to the conversation. I’m sorry we didn’t get a picture together, but I’m so grateful for your presence and support.

I left thinking differently about my calendar, my relationships, my work, and all the things I’ve convinced myself I “have” to do.

Some things do not need better balance. They need to be released.

What are you ready to purge?

Still thinking about how incredible the Kennedy Ryan Score release event was in DC last night. ✨📚

The conversation and the energy in the room made it such a powerful experience. Score explores love, ambition, healing, and mental illness in a deeply connecting and human way. Kennedy Ryan has such a gift for creating characters that feel real, layered, and unforgettable.

One quote from Kennedy that will stay with me:
“I never write the hurt without the healing.”

Huge thank you to MahoganyBooks for organizing such a thoughtful and beautifully executed event and for continuing to create spaces that celebrate Black authors and readers. 💚
