Sliced white bread. Here in Barcelona, we call it pan Bimbo, and we use it for biquinis. But you can’t order one by that name anywhere else: in Madrid, it’s a mixto. Bread, ham and cheese. And that’s as far as my knowledge of sliced bread goes. I need to travel more.

Last Sunday, The Only True Protest Is Beauty, the first exhibition at the @fondazionedriesvannoten, closed. I took part with some of my largest pieces and with Glazed Trays, a project exploring ceramic processes and materials that I’ve been developing over the past few years.

There was something special about arriving at Palazzo Pisani Moretta by water, seeing my pieces there, and eating what, for me, now sums up Venice: a tramezzino, a crustless white-bread Italian sandwich, soft, generously filled, and triangular.

Thank you to the whole Fondazione team, especially Sabrina and Jurgen, for their generosity, and to Luis from @side.gallery. Being part of this project and having a tramezzino with Dries Van Noten and Patrick Vangheluwe is, to me, a kind of beauty I’ll never forget.

It began four years ago, with a slab of clay and, with a gesture, lifted it onto four legs, transforming it into a tray: a defined space. What I understood as an accident, became an ongoing exploration guided by glaze, where the rectangle merely sets the boundaries and the real interest happens within them.

“At the Fondazione, we have always been drawn to the poetry of the making process that delicate space where human intention surrenders to the unpredictable forces of nature. Xavier Mañosa’s work exists entirely within this beautiful, fragile intersection. In his practice, clay and glaze are not simply materials to be mastered; they are partners in a deeply emotional dialogue. There is an alchemy in Xavier’s approach that resonates profoundly with everything the Fondazione stands for. We share a devotion to the tactile, a fascination with how layered experimentation yields entirely new languages of color, and a deep reverence for the quiet beauty found in irregularity and the unexpected. This project, Glazed Trays, is a testament to the freedom found in constraint. By anchoring his work in the simple, geometric limit of the rectangle, Xavier opens up an infinite landscape of texture and emotion.

Each piece is a unique record of survival. In the intense heat of the kiln, rigorous technical formulas are transformed into surfaces that feel startlingly alive, some brutal and heavy, others delicate, holding vivid glaze like suspended mercury. By slightly elevating these slabs, Xavier transforms them fromfunctional objects into sculptural gestures, inviting us to look more closely at the traces of his hand. We are deeply honored to support this publication and to welcome the se pieces into our space. This book is a beautiful archive of a four-year journey, an intimate glimpse into an artist's restless curiosity, and the profound joy that comes from embracing the unrepeatable.”
