How I record food videos for clients and in the future when I’m a proper chef… myself :))

Fun fact out of the 643 shoots I did in my first year as a videographer I reckon at least half were food related shoots!

So here are my steps:
1️⃣ I like using a tripod for all of my shots. There’s often a lot of movement in the cooking itself so extra movement can make the shot look hectic and take away from the beauty of the art of cooking itself.

2️⃣ I use the Canon Eos R6 mark 2 with a 35mm lens at f1.8 and shoot in 4K 25p. Think this entire set up with the tripod costs like $2,500. Might seem pricey but hiring a videographer can cost $500 - $1,000+ per shoot!

3️⃣ Editing: I like to keep it simple and only show a few seconds of the key moments (cooking the egg, sprinkling things on the egg, place the plate down). I’m also super anal about any shakes so I’ll clip around any imperfection.

4️⃣ Tidy space. A nice dish can be ruined by its surroundings.

5️⃣ focal point: because I shoot in shallow depth of field (f/1.8). I’m very careful with where I choose to place the focal point. I’ll usually focus on the area that I want the viewer to look at or if it’s the food, the most appealing part.

6. Lighting is key. I’ve found having angled back lighting with a warm tone and then slight light in front of the food makes it look the best.

I was lucky enough to get gifted the Amaran Verge Max by my friend @marcovenok at @amarancreators 🙏🙏 elite light for my table and any food on it :))
