Made unforgettable by the people, here are few hints of a “complex to explain, impossible to catch into pic” experience somewhere in the Tankwa Desert of South Africa #AfrikaBurn2024 #VagabondsCamp

You’ve probably heard of @burningman 🙌🏼 But, have you heard of @midburnil?

✨ Midburn is the second largest regional burn in the world, after Afrikaburn in South Africa.

✨ While Burning Man happens in the Black Rock City desert in Nevada, Midburn happens in the Negev Desert in Israel.

✨ “Midbar” means “desert” in Hebrew, so the name Midburn is a really fun play on words!

✨ While Burning Man is now nearly 80,000 people large, Midburn is closer to 11,000. A certain number of tickets are allotted for Israelis and a certain number for foreign passport holders.

✨ If you want to attend as a non-Hebrew speaker, look for camps that welcome internationals. I recommend @mexicamp as very welcoming and traveler friendly.

✨ While Burning Man is nine days, Midburn is six. And while Burning Man can easily take 14+ hours in traffic to reach, Midburn will rarely take more than 4+ hours from the Tel Aviv airport.

If you want to learn loads more about #Midburn, Google “Alex in Wanderland Midburn” and my many blog posts will come up.

Hit me with questions in the comments!

(And guys are you proud of me?! I made another reel!)

Better to burn out than fade away ✨

Life is funny… I first came to Midburn in 2018, to a festival in a country I had never been to with a language I didn’t speak. I didn’t know a soul there — I just felt this calling to challenge myself and to go do something (going to a burn solo) that scared me. As the city burned so did my passion for this place and this experience and four years later, I couldn’t leave my tent without bumping into someone I know from Tel Aviv or overhearing little snippets of a conversation I could vaguely understand. You just never know when a new adventure or new chapter is about to start.

So it felt full circle to get my dusty self back out to the desert. Going to two burns in one year (like, two months apart) was definitely a little bit bananas but it felt like the universe told me to go so… I listened! In the midst of a blind panic that I wouldn’t get #BurningMan tickets, I started putting out feelers for a #Midburn one, hoping I’d land one or the other. When both landed in my lap within 24 hours of each other, I said k let’s do this haha ✌🏼

The other wild thing is Midburn started literally on the same day my Egypt retreats ended. So I went from 21 straight days of hosting to getting on a plane, renting a car and driving myself directly to the desert for total sensory overload, haha.

Because of my time limitations and traveling from abroad, I had asked total strangers — also known as the festival fam — at @mexicamp if they had a tent, bedding and other essentials for me and as my long journey led me to the gates, I prayed they had so I didn’t have to sleep in my car. The Playa provided as always and by the time I crawled into my tent I felt like I’d landed on another planet. Normally I go to like, a spa after retreats so this was quite the change 😅 I guess for me a spa is a retreat for the body but a burn is a retreat for the soul ✨

I said to my friends this is either the best idea or the worst idea I’ve ever had… there is no other outcome lol.

More posts to come to reveal which it was but… feels like this lil gallery is a dead giveaway 🫶🏼

Would you go to a festival solo? Midburn 2022
