On the occasion of their 5th year anniversary, let us not forget and let us continue to point out that MARFA SPIRIT CO was born with utter disregard for both tradition and its heritage.

In 2021 we successfully pushed them to remove “Texas Sotol” from their labels and gave them cause to rethink their project, which has always been based purely on cultural appropriation and with little regard for the laws of the country and the culture that they sought to profit from.

A course correction appeared on the horizon — but then they made the decision to knowingly partner, source, and work with a Chihuahuan company that is widely known for complete disregard of ecology and environmental laws.

This partner company has been investigated for illegal extraction of Sotol Dasylirion in several different parts of northern Mexico by PROFEPA the Federal governmental agency overseeing the enforcement of environmental & natural resource regulations.

This not only shows us once again that MARFA SPIRIT CO is an unethical company, but also — contrary to what they claim — that the reality is they continue to harm both the tradition and the biomass of Sotol.

Chinati weekend kicks off for us with our 5th birthday, and @morgan_f_weber’s 45th! We’ll be celebrating with @the_grand_tourists starting at 8pm Thursday • then pencil us in Friday for our friends bringing the party from Chihuahua @gabbagabbabar • and rounding it out on Saturday is our neighbor @patrick_b_ray 🎶

Our whole block will be alive with open studios including @juliagabrielstudio and @theindigoprophet down in Bay 7, so take a look around and then park it with us for more good times ✌️

We’re opening the doors to Bay 7 for Chinati Weekend.

Two textile makers, two future studios, and a lot of plans for this little corner of the old Godbold Feed Mill. Julia Gabriel Studio + The Indigo Prophet are taking over Bay 7, where we’ll be making, sewing, experimenting—and eventually hosting workshops, classes, and other reasons to come make things with us.

Come get a first look at the spaces, see what we’ve been working on, and hang out with us Friday from 4–8.

And because it’s Chinati Weekend, @marfaspiritco will be keeping things going with music Thursday, Friday + Saturday.

Come for the textiles. Stay for the fun times.
