Earlier this year, I was honored to be asked by Meta Newhouse, Chairperson of Undergraduate Communications Design at Pratt Institute, to curate the faculty exhibition for the Illustration Department at Pratt.

Without question Illustration is a powerful narrative art form that is integral in our daily lives. It is seen and absorbed by so many (arguably more than almost any other art form).

This exhibition highlights the extraordinary individual talent of these artists, while demonstrating the power of their overall visual language within this collective setting.

“Beyond Words”
Friday, October 24 / 6-8PM
Schafler Gallery/Pratt Institute

My hope is that this exhibition encourages viewers to see illustration through a new lens — recognizing that these artists are creating works that have immense cultural impact and relevance, equal to any artwork hanging in our galleries and museums.

Thank you to all of the artists for your trust: Richard Borge, Megan Cash, David Cooper, Lynne Foster, Cheryl Gross, Rudy Gutierrez, Margaret Hurst, Thomas La Padula, Veronica Lawlor, Scott Menchin, Tim O’Brien, Yuxin Pei, and TLaloC.

Mana Contemporary is pleased to announce that our Director, Kele McComsey has curated an exhibition at Pratt Institute.

This exhibition highlights the extraordinary individual talent of these artists, while demonstrating the power of their overall visual language within this collective setting.

I’ve always been hesitant to categorize art — doing so can shape the viewer’s perception before they can create their own relationship with what they are engaging with.

I’m deeply honored and grateful to be included in Beyond Words: Visual Language, an exhibition from the Pratt Illustration Department @prattbfacomd

This show gives me the chance to share gallery space with many of my illustration heroes who are now also my colleagues. It is a powerful reminder of how fortunate I am to be part of such an inspiring community. Pratt Institute @prattinstitute continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of illustration in the 21st century, and I am proud to be involved in this important conversation.

Curated by Kele McComsey, the exhibition will be on view at The Rubelle and Norman Schafler Gallery in the Pratt Institute Chemistry Building on the first floor. The opening reception takes place on Friday, October 24, 2025, from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibition runs through December 13, 2025.
