Had a great afternoon with Mom and Sis enjoying “Bugs Bunny at the Symphony.” It’s always amazing to realize what a great classical music education I absorbed through Warner Brothers cartoons without even noticing. But I think my favorite part of today was listening to the orchestra tune up beforehand, with all the goofiest instruments foregrounded: a waddling bassoon riff, a tangle of xylophone plinks, a slide whistle getting a rare spotlight.

Mariners/Guardians with the fam. I asked mom and Amy what their walkup music would be (I’m in a Van Halen mood and picked “Panama”). Mom suggested Perry Como…but it was Sis who spontaneously burst into Meredith Brooks’s “Bitch.” 😂

After synchro this morning, I took Mom out junking at the Great Junk Hunt flea market at the Monroe fairgrounds. The Zasu Pitts cookbook did not come home with me…but we had Grinch mimosas (a splash of blue curaçao to give them that arresting color!), and I bought the giant hand-painted ice-skating penguins plywood cutout, the metal-shop Christmas tree, and the vintage wooden Velveeta box, which is currently holding napkins on my kitchen table. Good times!

I’m off work this week, so today I took @marge4716 on a belated Mother’s Day trip to the @woodlandparkzoo (where neither of us had been for ~15 years. We logged 10k steps easily, and hung around peering through the fence watching birds of prey being trained until the keepers noticed us and invited us in to be a practice audience for Beans the owl, who was still getting used to people and cameras in the bleachers. So we sat in the front row while he swooped back and forth over our heads for the reward of mouse nuggets. This was the most magnificent thing that’s ever happened to me at the zoo, bar none. We had snacks, and made a quick detour through the Rose Garden, where I have (had?) always intended to be married, someday. I suppose that door hasn’t closed yet, fellas, so get in line! Anyway, a great and wonderful day. Love ya, Mama! And thanks to all the staff for answering questions and helping us make incredible memories!

Happy birthday, today and here in 1971, to my beautiful Mama! I’m 90% sure that soda is the remnants of a Skipper’s fish and chips birthday feast, in the foreground, so it can’t be easily repeated—but I can promise you a redo at Spud’s, maybe next weekend when I’ve powered through this stomach bug? Love you madly! ❤️💕🎂

The three of us are having a good time in Pacific Beach. Squeegee has enjoyed the freedom of being able to run towards the surf with the beach practically to ourselves. He’s eaten so much sand though, that I wouldn’t be surprised if he started pooping pearls in the not too distant future.

In my wildest dreams as a young girl, I never imagined turning 50. It seemed so far away, and seemed like something that only happened to old people. But here I am. I’m feeling so many different emotions today; unbelievable gratitude for having made it this far with the support of family, friends, and a myriad of past and current four-legged critters (missing you terribly today, Esther 🐾❤️). I’m also feeling pangs of heartache, knowing that life’s most precious moments are passing faster than I can control. I am so blessed to have experienced so much thus far in this span of life, and I owe the world to my mom and sister… even though they brought me a giant cake that I can’t possibly eat alone, and will most certainly give me diabetes if I do.

Fifty, I’m ready for you.

I was finally able to get together with my mom for a little belated birthday gift giving today. I’d told her back in October that I’d ordered a gift for her, but it wouldn’t be arriving until at least mid-November. In actuality, I was picking up said gift from our dear friend @70dot on my recent trip to Atlanta. She absolutely loves her “Cabbagetown Homies” piece.
