Another year and another Adelaide Writers’ Week.

Possibly my shortest attendance yet, as I was only under those trees for 1.5 days out of 6 - but it was wonderful because of the lovely people I shared those days with. Special shout out to @michaelaisok for fully committing to the Kate Bush Wuthering Heights dance💖

My book haul from #adlww is modest this year but filled with wonderful nonfiction to challenge me:

• The Lasting Harm - Witnessing the Trial of Ghislaine Maxwell by Lucia Osbourne Crowley (the one book I read before the event and cannot recommend it enough - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️)
• All Women Want by Alyx Gorman
• Words to Sing the World Alive by multiple authors (Anita Heiss, Cheryl Leary, Thomas Mayo and Jared Thomas at the session)
• Näku Dhäruk: The Bark Petitions by Clare Wright
• Dirrayawadha by Anita Heiss
• American Whitelash by Wesley Lowery

Day 20 - Tokyo, Japan

On our last full day in Japan, we decided to explore Ueno park and the temples, which more ornate than I was expecting - especially the golden splendour of Ueno Toshogu Shrine. What is stunning about this temple is that the fence around the temple has intricate carvings of native birds, wildlife and fish paired with significant native flora.
🎏
We then made our way to Yanaka Ginza to explore the shopping street, but were feeling a little peckish upon arrival so found ourselves in a charming local patisserie, Pâtissier Chocolatier Inamura Shozo. I ate the most divine pumpkin tart, and I am not even a pumpkin pie fan! Mum gobbled down a blueberry tart which received equally high praise.
🍰
After browsing the stores of Yanaka Ginza, Mum returned to Nippori Fabric town and I did a jaunt on the Yamanote Line to:
🍄 Ikebukuro (for Board games shops, Mega Pokemon Centre and Donguri Republic),
🦖 Shinjuku (for Kinokuniya Bookshop, board game, vinyl records and stationery shops), and
🐦‍🔥 Akihabara (for board game shops and a few extra suitcases… haha!)
🍣
We ended the day at our hotel, dining on a large selection of delicious foods from the local supermarket (so cheap!) and an early night sleep after all of the packing.

Day 19 - Tokyo, Japan

More immersive art means starting the day at TeamLab Planets, and I heeded the warnings of the travel blogs and booked the first session of the day (to avoid wet feet smells). I adored this experience - developed with the intention to engage multiple senses in the art - we walked through running water, bounced through a dark room of cushioned floor, submerged ourselves in knee high water as a virtual koi pond, laid on the ground to watch a kaleidoscope of flowers, and floated amongst hanging orchids.
🪷
After the TeamLab experience we decided to do another crafty workshop and made our way to the Kagurazaka branch of Domyo, for a Kumihimo class. Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese craft of braiding silk into various items. After a presentation on the history of the craft and a tour through their show rooms, we got into the workshop and braided out our bracelets as souvenirs. This was such a fun and relaxing experience, I would absolutely do it again!
🌼
I found the soft clacking of the weighted silk bobbins to be particularly pleasing.

Day 17 - Tokyo, Japan

Today was a day for art, but we decided to visit Zojo-ji Temple and Tokyo Tower first. The temple was solemn compared the colourful majesty of Senso-ji the day before - except for the myriad of little buddhas representing protection for children and comfort for families who have lost a child.
🗼
Next stop was Azabudai Hills complex for TeamLab Borderless. A wonderful and highly accessible interactive art gallery. It was wonderful to wander aimlessly between the rooms, watching the art work interact and being engulfed in twisting lights and patterns.
🌼
A surprise addition for the day was visiting the Pokemon and Kogei exhibition, traditional Japanese crafts capturing creatures and scenes from the Pokemon world. It was a glorious blend of awe, fascination and nostalgia.
🧶
Final stop for the day was Walnut Tokyo, a beautiful and busy yarn shop. We also visited them on the first day of the Tokyo Yarn Crawl, so our purchase came with a cute bag and list of other yarn shops to check out.

Day 16 - Tokyo, Japan

Back in Tokyo and starting the day with a sleep in, we got to Sensoji Temple a little later than expected but still enjoyed taking in the sights and sounds of the market stalls. We grabbed a Unana Unagi Onigiri for breakfast (delicious)then made our way to Kappabashi for all our kitchen dreams. We found some amazing knives, fish bone tweezers, pottery bowls and - the most amazing device of all - a miso muddler. Our lives have been forever changed by the miso muddler.
🍥
We then arrived in Nippori Fabric town to continue the crafty quest of our holiday, and visited a handful of the 80+ stores in this district. There were so many beautiful and well pieced fabrics to be found, but also so many unique designs and patterns. All fabric lovers need to visit Nippori at least once.
🧵
The rest of the day was spent resting and recovering from all the walking in preparation for the next day.

Day 15 - Nikko, Japan

This day trip was filled with so many beautiful sights I have decided to share more of them.
🙈
Quite possibly one of the most unique and fascinating Japanese shrines I have seen, Nikko Toshogu Shrine is a startling combination of Shinto and Buddhist sensibilities. The 17th century shrine is dedicated to the first shogun and the exquisite black and white carved architecture just took my breath away.
🙉
It is also the origin place of the three monkeys, “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil”. Carved into the shrine stables, monkeys are shown to depict the cycle of a good life and the famous trio are one of the many panels.
🙊
This temple is a must see but so are the monkey Taiyaki at Kumoizu and the delicious lunch at Hippari-dako (who welcomes vegetarians🐒).

Day 15 - Nikko, Japan

Our first day trip from Tokyo, found us at Ueno station at 6am catching a Shinkansen and local train to arrive at Nikko.
🛤️
This beautiful town in the mountains is home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites, mainly the park and temples. But there are also waterfalls, hot springs and forest tracks to explore (which we did not, but would if we had more time here).
🍁
Our first and quite possibly favourite location was Shōyō-en garden, which is actually part of Rinnoji Temple museum. Due to the cooler mountain temperatures the autumn colours started to show and the weather was magnificent to explore the garden, museum and temple complex.
🎋
With so many sights to see in Nikko it is definitely worth taking a moment to breathe in the serenity and vivacious colours of this garden.

Day 14 - Tokyo, Japan

Starting our first full day in Tokyo at Meji Shrine and wandering through the forest park, taking a few moments of forest bathing before diving back into the cityscape.
🌳
We were lucky enough to catch a train direct to Setagaya-Daita and jump in queue for Shiro-Hige’s Cream Puff Factory, which I wholeheartedly recommend even if you don’t know Ghibli or Totoro. They are adorable and delicious and well worth the trek. Even better, the store is walking distance to Shimokitazawa, a popular vintage clothing district and where we found Puppy Yarn.
🧶
The next stop was Shibuya, and by this time we quickly noticed the Sunday crowds and huge numbers of other tourists. We managed to grab a quick bite to eat and shop at Tower Records and Jins, before escaping to The Ōta Memorial Museum of Art in Harajuku. We managed to snatch a few moments of calm in the museum before re-entering the weekend crowds and feeling overwhelmed.
🌊
We beat a hasty retreat to our hotel and feasted on goodies from the local supermarket before taking time to rest.

Day 13 - Tokyo, Japan

A travel day and another relaxing train journey from Kyoto to Tokyo (with views of Mount Fuji!), however, our small carry on bags were starting to bulge from all our souvenirs. Thankfully our hotel held the bags for us so we could make our way directly to Jimbocho “Book Town”.
📚
I finally was able to visit Kitazawa Books in person, after avidly admiring their Instagram account. I made two purchases before continuing our exploration around Jimbocho.
📖
Notable shops to visit:
Magnif (for vintage magazines)
Nyankodo (for cat lovers)
Komiyama (for books, prints and their gallery too)
Sugorokuya (an adorable board game shop!)
Bumpodo (fabulous stationery shop)
Disk Union Jazz Tokyo (amazing selection of jazz, but felt on the minority as the only women in the shop)
🔖
A funny memory of the day, we were stopped outside of magnif by a camera crew and interviewer who avidly asked why we decided to visit Jimbocho. Being a “booklover” was not going to cut it, I had to give reasons for my interest in secondhand and vintage books. It was fun and the first time I had to thoroughly explain my love of books.

Day 11 - Kyoto, Nara & Osaka, Japan

Today was a big day of touring, yet despite both of us being a little under the weather, we were determined to achieve as much as we could. (Which turns out was quite a lot)
⛩️
Starting at 7:30am at Fushimi Inari we decided to walk through the beautiful torii gates until we tired, but we actually made it to the top without much fuss. We did take the wrong path on the final ascent and made the last long stretch of stairs harder for ourselves - but we made it!
🦌
We then made our way to Nara on the local train and walked from the station to the breathtaking Todaiji Temple, and then into Nara Park to Kasuga Taisha Shrine. It was wonderful to revisit both of these sites, as they were favourites from my last Japan holiday, but it was wonderful to see them through mum’s eyes discovering their beauty and history.
🥟
A bus and train later, we found ourselves in Osaka. We explored the Namba area primarily for an outrageously good yarn shop but then I found the board game shops and I stocked up on some Japanese game titles I have been keen to play. Our energy was fading fast, so we took the obligatory photo with the running man before eating a ginormous vegetarian okonomiyaki. After dinner, we were lucky enough to find a train that took us all the way back to the station near our hotel.
🛤️
A very good day.

Day 10 - Kyoto, Japan

Our plans for the day rapidly changed from exploring Kiyomizudera Temple and the surrounding area, to getting cold medicine and visiting a select few local shops.
🍯
The cold was being held off with medicine and copious amounts of tea. But we still found a few beautiful shops to explore and a bloody delicious ramen eatery:
Linnet - Clothing and Fabric shop
@mielmie__
@kyotoengine
And kyoto kyukyodo
🏮
After resting at the hotel, we made our way to Gion Hall for the Gion Odori. The geisha and maiko performance was stunning. Showcasing six scenes across Kyoto varied between romantic, folklore and comic, then the finale piece with all the performers on stage to showcase the changing of the seasons. I was so happy I was well enough to attend and witness such a wondrous show.
