🎨 Art Team Magazine Issue 8 Proudly Presents: Tony Strickland

Independent Art Curator • Visionary Champion of Irish Art

We are deeply honoured and proud to feature the remarkable Tony Strickland in Issue 8 of Art Team Magazine. A legendary independent curator whose life’s work has lifted up generations of artists, Tony shares his wisdom, experience, and enduring hope for the future of the arts in Ireland.

✨ On Alternative Galleries

“The role of alternative galleries is to provide a platform for emerging artists and art students. These opportunities allow them to progress their practice in the public eye before they are ready to approach the major commercial or public galleries.”

✨ On Finding the Spark

“I’m always looking for artists who have something to say. Personal taste doesn’t come into it. I’m interested in works that show development and cohesion.”

✨ On Being Seen Through Artists’ Eyes

“It’s always fascinating to me to see an artist’s interpretation of myself over many years. The range is quite extraordinary.”

✨ On the Evolution of Irish Art

“There are less commercial galleries, however there are many more opportunities all around the country as local councils have become more involved in the Visual Arts. Of course digital communication has helped to expose artists in a new way.”

✨ On Hope & The Path Forward

“I’ve seen a number of financial crises and COVID over the years. Artists are often struggling but manage to rise above these pressures. Initiatives like the basic income scheme and major developers’ support for artists will all be a positive sign for the future.”

Tony Strickland has spent decades visiting artists directly in their studios, believing in voices that might otherwise go unheard, and creating spaces where art truly lives. His career reminds us that curation is not just about selecting work—it is about seeing people, believing in them, and giving them a platform to be seen.

Thank you, Tony, for your wisdom, your generosity, and your lifelong dedication to the heart of Irish art. It is an honour to share your story in Issue 8. 🤍
