That was a memorable day to me, for it made great changes in me.” - Dickens, Great Expectations.

I think about that quote often and how a single day can completely alter the course of your life. Six years ago, during my sophomore year of high school, I missed a SCAD Zoom info session. Because I missed it, an advisor reached out to me. Five years ago, I visited SCAD for the first time after applying in April of my junior year. The second I stepped on campus, I knew deep down it was where I wanted to be. I never applied anywhere else.

The last four years have been some of the most challenging and rewarding of my life. There were times I wanted to transfer and times I questioned whether I belonged, but I’m grateful I stayed. I explored different majors before deciding on photography after a conversation with @jaihsen and taking Photo 113 with @professor_jaclyn , who first sparked my interest in the medium.

By staying, I made lifelong friends, helped bring back and lead the photo club with my best friend and co-pres @cc_mccartney, studied abroad in Iceland and Ireland with @professorlane , learned large format photography and the Zone System from @rebeccanolanphoto , interned with @tobiamakover , and got support from professors, classmates, and friends like @_.heatherstewart along the way.

Most of all, I found a real sense of community. Thank you to everyone I got to learn from and create with, especially the photography department, the faculty, and Jon Horey for all their guidance and support. Your belief in me helped me land a job offer before I even graduated.

If that advisor hadn’t reached out, my life would be totally different. Now that I am graduating and getting ready to start at B&H, I feel so grateful for every friendship, opportunity, and experience SCAD has given me. 💛📸
