Science Friday 002: Masters of Disguise 🐠

Dive curious. Discover what others miss.

This week we went looking for reef animals that specialize in disappearing.

Over two dives, we watched trumpetfish change their patterns, found collector urchins covering themselves with algae and rubble, and spotted lizardfish blending almost perfectly into the reef.

But camouflage isn’t always about hiding from predators. For some predators like trumpetfish and lizardfish, being hard to see can also help them get close enough to catch dinner.

One question from the dive came from Sivan: Do trumpetfish have chromatophores? The best evidence suggests they do, allowing different patterns already built into their skin to appear as pigment expands or contracts.

Our biggest takeaway: disappearing isn’t one strategy. Change your appearance. Cover yourself. Match the background. Different animals solve the same problem in very different ways.

Next Science Friday — Mission 003: The Grazers
Friday, September 4

We’ll compare how herbivores and detritivores remove material from the reef and ask: are all the animals we casually call “grazers” actually doing the same job?

Give us a call: (808) 882-7774 or reserve your spot online: kohaladivers.com

See you Friday!
