From June 15th to July 6th, Maria Gutu, an award-winning photographer based in Chișinău, was our artist in residence in Zagreb. She spent three weeks exploring the city, getting to know the art communities, spaces, and resisting the heat wave. Before we welcome our new resident, we wish Maria a pleasant summer and look forward to her remarkable work (see our previous post) being exhibited in Zagreb in November. More details~ in due time.

This Artist in Residence program is part of the Motel Trogir project, which this year is supported by the Kultura nova Foundation, the City of Zagreb and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia. The program is realized in partnership with Oberliht association from Chisinau.

From June 15th to July 6th we are hosting Chișinău based photographer Maria Guțu, in our Zagreb residence. She is selected through an Open call for artists from Moldova launched earlier this year in collaboration with OBERLIHT.

On this occasion, we are presenting several images of her captivating photography series entitled ‘Homeland’ (2019- ongoing).

This (somewhat burdensome) title that the artist chose for her photographic wanderings in rural parts of Moldova is a framework for recording people, landscapes, children, teenagers, animals, customs, not without ambivalence. Starting from the intimate position of growing up in Moldova in the absence of parents who went to work abroad, Maria explores everyday situations where life takes its course, but with traces of absence or the unspoken that are imprinted in the space between the camera and the documented. "Around one quarter of the population has left the country in the last twenty years for economic reasons. Those left behind are mostly people who are too old to go abroad to work – and the children of those who have made their way abroad," says one of her texts.

Whether you think of Rineke Dijkstra's teenage portraits when looking at her images or Andrei Tarkovsky's landscapes, or the treatment of the characters reminds you of some of the liminal practices of post-Soviet photographers, Maria Gutu's artistic practice is a kind of transition between the inner and outer gaze, a gaze that belongs to the scene, one that reciprocates, but also gets caught in a kind of gap between the real and the suspension of reality that the author herself produces and draws us into.

“I chose black and white, because my main cultural influences are mainly black and white. I always loved black and white movies and old photographs, so in my work I don’t think about colour, but about light and human emotions.”

-
Maria Guțu graduated in Cinematography from the Academy of Music, Theater and Fine Arts in Chișinău, and in 2022 she completed studies at the Docdocdoc School of Modern Photography. She is the winner of the 2024 Leica Oskar Barnack Award in the Newcomer category, among other recognitions.
