Here's a mat heading to the US Virgin Islands for Mariah Ernst @mariah_langit Mariah is a mat surfer of long standing who knows how to ride a mat well. She is on the team at Emocean Magazine @emocean.surf and has a close effinity with the ocean and natural world, so no surprises then that Mariah rides a mat! Having recently hung out with Andrew Buck @aslbuck talking mats, Mariah was pretty clear that she wanted an RB-JMC super-free-breather with negative elastic rocker and, a particular Buck influence, an animal theme. As Mariah has always had a fantasy of skimming across a wave face on a giant clam shell her choice was simple and "Shell Yes!" was born! 😁 Shell Yes! is a nice addition to the quiver for Mariah. Over the years she has had a Nouveau Racer and a free (flat) rockered RB-JMC that has more restricted venting so Shell Yes! will give a very different ride to both. Very technical and very fast. Perfect addition. Shell Yes! also has one of the new low profile spring valves so I'm excited to hear how Mariah finds it. So, shell yes will be heading over to the US Virgin Islands and I can't wait to hear and see how she goes. A bit late to posting this but was honored to have my image from @theeddieaikau featured in @emocean.surf most recent issue 8: the Infinite, “Loved to Death” by @tinyshocks Everytime I get my hands on an issue of Emocean, I sit down and read it cover to cover. In today’s digital age, what @thembihanify and @mariah_langit curate has the ability to hold my attention and feel all the…emoceans (hehe). It’s always awesome to see your images in print. For Emocean’s eighth issue, I went long about depression, the magic of meteorology, and diarrhea. No really, I actually wrote a personal history about falling in love with surfing again and how curiosity rescued me from melancholy. As ever, it’s lovely to work with Mimi, Thembi, Kyle, and Maxine, who tolerate my demented ideas.

In 2009 I went to Bali for my first time. I arrived in the dark to Bingin and woke up (grabbed my disposable CVS camera) and snapped this first photo from my bed. It didn’t seem real to me that i was there. It still doesn’t after 16 years has passed. The following few weeks i stayed in Bingin were some times I will always cherish for the rest of my life. The kindness of the local people, endless waves, and “simple non resort structures” were what made it so special. I hope that this iconic place gets to stay or be protected in some capacity from impending development. Thank you to the people of Bali for letting outsiders ,like myself ,visit over the years but also I hope that a line in some way gets drawn for the sake of the land.

Haitian artist @zephirinfrantz takes us through the process by which he paints mystical underwater beings in Issue 08–The Infinite. His work is an especially powerful when considered in the context of Afro-Caribbean stories of mermaids and their appearance in the fine and folk art of Haiti. Black mermaids and ocean spirits have long been a part of Haitian storytelling and culture, with roots in African cosmology, and even predate European mermaid myths. Ariel is not the OG local here. Frantz’s rainbow colored mermaid queens are sexy, powerful, and have helped him create over 2,000 pieces of artwork since 1988. Pick up a copy now of 08 for the full dream.
