Merci d’avoir donné vie à cette première édition de Call & Response — Healing Through Collective Voices.
Hier, nous avons pris le temps d’écouter, de réfléchir, de créer et de prendre soin de nous ensemble.
Les interventions de Sarah Demart et de Marie-Fidèle Dusingize ont ouvert des échanges précieux sur le racisme, la charge raciale et leurs effets sur la santé mentale. La table de conversation nous a permis de prolonger ces réflexions à partir de nos expériences et de nos questions.
Avec Landry Martin Kalla Mballe, l’écoute musicale collective nous a fait découvrir des histoires, entendre autrement et interroger les normes qui façonnent nos regards — notamment les canons de beauté imposés aux femmes dans la musique.
L’atelier d’écriture avec Anjeli, puis le Kemetic Yoga avec Tine — Les RooTines, ont offert d’autres façons de nous exprimer et de revenir à nous.
Merci aux participant·es pour leur présence, leur confiance et la qualité de leurs contributions. Merci aux intervenant·es, ainsi qu’à Nina Mpoma, Nsa Mpoma et Gisèle Dushimé pour leur engagement.
Cette première édition nourrit ma conviction : nous avons besoin d’espaces où nos expériences sont entendues et où le soin individuel peut rencontrer le soin collectif.

FULL HOUSE ❤️

Thank you, truly, to every single person who came to the premiere of The Rift Between Us. Seeing the room completely full, feeling the energy in the audience, hearing the conversations during and after the screening, and sharing that panel discussion with Marie-Fidèle and Betel is something I will carry with me for a long time. Even though Nozizwe couldn’t join us for the panel discussion, she has definitely left her imprint by captivating and inspiring us through her work and on screen presence.

And since Wednesday, I’ve been receiving so many messages. I’ve been reading the reviews, the reflections, the questions, the love, and also the open, honest and well-grounded criticism. Thank you. Truly.

This documentary was made to create conversations, and seeing people engage with it so openly means more to me than I can put into words.

What happened in that room reminded me why The Rift Between Us needed to exist beyond academia and why these conversations deserve space.

And because the demand has been so great, we are already looking into a second screening edition in November at Cinema Galeries. 🎬

Meet Marie-Fidèle Dusingize one of the documentary’s leading voices 🌟

It was such a pleasure having you on set! Your knowledge about Belgium’s colonial history and its impact on today’s Sub-Saharan diaspora brought so much more dimension to the documentary! 🧡

🎥 Marie-Fidèle brings a research-based perspective grounded in both academic knowledge and close observation of contemporary culture. Drawing on examples from European pop culture, (social)media, and the music industry, particularly in French-speaking Belgium and France, she connects the history of Belgium colonialism to the realities we encounter every day. Through contemporary examples and her expert insights, she helps unpack the structural mechanisms behind misogynoir and explains how they shape the lives and relationships of both Black women and Black men.

Info: Marie-Fidèle Dusingize is a sociologist and PhD candidate in socio-anthropology, specializing in Afro-identities, decolonial memory, and Black masculinity. Raised in Brussels, she committed herself early on to issues surrounding social justice and systemic racism.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and showed out! ✨

I still get chills thinking about this evening!

Our event in Leuven, was the first event we organised for The Rift Between Us, where we showed our official trailer (not to be confused with the teaser shown on our page).

The evening was filled with honest, truthful and sharp conversations about us, women and the relationships we have with ourselves (and men), our paths and our journeys.

Thank you to the public for your thought provoking questions, which definitely made me think about the importance of which story lines and images I will include in the documentary (we’re in the final stages of the editing process 🤞🏾).

So so so grateful for your support and kind words during and after the evening.

📍Can’t wait to see you all on Wednesday evening, 30th of September in Cinema Galeries in Brussels. All information will follow in due time. But for now block the 30th in your agenda.

Bon on cafte ou pas ? 🫣

Cette fois-ci, vidéo d’exception car je suis accompagnée par mon amie @mariefdusingize_ , socio-anthropologue et conférencière 🫶🏼

On avait envie de lier nos deux comptes d’une manière ou d’une autre, et quoi de mieux que de le faire autour d’un café ☕️ dans un établissement offrant un café d’exception, durable et respectant la Nature des terres du Congo jusqu’à Uccle; puisque chez @kauabrussels on retrouve le Robusca coffee qui est une entreprise belge de café provenant du Congo 🇨🇩

Vous allez vite comprendre que l’endroit est validé, les produits frais servis et dans les verres et dans l’assiette nous ont séduites. L’endroit est très cosy ☺️

Rita Afonso is creatief maker en academisch spreker. ze bevraagt vanuit haar eigen ervaring en positie via verschillende vormen, zoals films of podcasts; grote maatschappelijke thema’s, zoals structurele ongelijkheid en racisme, maar ook (zelf)liefde en zorg.

Zo werkte ze het afgelopen jaar met behulp van Trill aan haar documentaire ‘The Rift between Us’. In maart modereerde Rita hiervoor het panelgesprek “All About Love” op Trill & Chill, en deze maand verzorgt ze op 28 mei met Hybrid Studios (i.s.m. 30CC) een volledige avond, waarin ze niet enkel haar film zal teasen, maar ook samen met andere makers het podium deelt. ‘The Rift Between Us’ gaat later dit jaar in première in Brussel. Stay tuned!

This post is here to bring clarity to our trailer event. In this way, we hope to avoid any misunderstandings or incorrect expectations.

We’ve noticed that many people assume we will be screening the full documentary next Thursday, but that is not the case. If this was not communicated clearly on our part, we sincerely apologise.

The full screening of The Rift Between Us will take place later this year, and everything regarding the official premiere will be communicated in due time via our page.

Next Thursday, we will be hosting our trailer event evening: an intimate first encounter with the film through an extended version of the teaser (which is already online 😉) alongside conversations, performances, and dialogue around the themes of the documentary, together with the participants ✨
