Here it finally is: MY BLACK & WHITE photo. Nothing glamorous because the origin of this challenge doesn’t call for that. The BLACK & WHITE photo challenge originated in Turkey as a form of female protest against the rise in #FEMICIDES. When someone dies a black & white photo of the deceased is printed in the newspaper or broadcasted on the news. Turkish women have experienced increasing rates of femicides over the recent years and alarming rates during the quarantine. 1 question I ask myself: Have the numbers increased or does social media help us to get the truth of the matter out & call these murders by a name we had to invent, in order to highlight this problem: the real pandemic: gender based violence against women?? Some older women claim that these crimes were unheard of during their times. I wonder if society simply lived in harmony or if we lacked the tools to communicate these crimes. I don’t have the answers. I just know it must stop. I know women deserve to live in equality, safety & peace. Yesterday I had a powerful conversation with @marielaly & the founder of pearl safe haven - a Safe House shelter for female victims of assault in Accra, Ghana. We journeyed through the statistics of the 54 African countries & the numbers are simply heart breaking. We journeyed through the carribean, where gender based violence & femicides are a real threat for women. I am having an IG with a Carribean woman next week. We use our voices to raise awareness. I witnessed femicides being reported on the news when I was in Jamaica. Multiple women from other islands reached out to me, to share this sad reality. Women in Turkey & Africa are sharing their reality. Together we cannot be silenced. I have experienced gender based assault & thus understand how traumatizing it is. I know so many women have experienced worse than me. But all in all I know #everyWOMANhasAstory. So I dedicate this challenge to all the amazing women who have supported me, who have shared their stories with me, who have listened to mine & who are collectively healing this painbody & trauma. Harmony & happiness is our birthright. Healing is our calling. Our voices are getting louder & echoe as 1.
