“Morrison is a literary artist of the first rank. She delves into the language itself, a language she wants to liberate from the fetters of race. And she addresses us with the lustre of poetry.” - Nobel Foundation, 1993. On this day, October 7, in 1993, Toni Morrison became the first Black woman to win a Nobel Prize in Literature. In honor of this historic anniversary, help Indigo Arts Alliance’s 2021 Mentorship Resident Sonya Clark commemorate one of the most enduring aspects of Toni Morrison’s work: the way she saw Black girls and Black women’s depth, clarity, and tenderness. Add your image to a growing archive that celebrates Black girlhood across generations! If you identified as a Black girl in your youth, we invite you to contribute a childhood photo of yourself between the ages of 9 to 11. Clark will incorporate these images into an artwork inspired by Morrison’s book “The Bluest Eye” and its young protagonists Pecola, Claudia and Freida. You can submit an photo 3 ways: 1. Send us a DM on instagram to @marigirlsproject. 2. Email us directly at marigirls@indigoartsalliance.me. 3. Fill out the google form linked in our bio. 🔗 The final artwork will be unveiled in 2028 as part of an upcoming exhibition. — Image: Toni Morrison receiving her Nobel Prize from H.M. “I wrote the first book [The Bluest Eye], because I wanted to read it. I thought that kind of book, with that subject—those most vulnerable, most undescribed, not taken seriously little black girls—had never existed seriously in literature. No one had ever written about them except as props. Since I couldn’t find a book that did that, I thought, ‘Well, I’ll write it and then I’ll read it.’ It was really the reading impulse that got me into the writing thing.” - Toni Morrison, from a 2014 interview with NEA Arts Magazine In celebration of what would have been her 95th birthday this week, we offer these words from the beloved author Toni Morrison. The first Black woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, she was undoubtedly one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Through her life’s work, Morrison consistently affirmed the breadth and complexity of Black life, challenging Western paradigms that would render Blackness as monolithic and “other”. We are proud to extend that legacy in partnership with our 2021 Mentorship Residency Alum, Sonya Clark, through the @marigirlsproject. Inspired by Freida, Pecola, and Claudia, the 9- to 11-year-old protagonists of “The Bluest Eye,” this open call invites Black female-identifying folks to share a photo of themselves a photo from their childhood for @sysclark’s upcoming project, Marigirls. Drawing on Morrison’s use of marigolds in “The Bluest Eye” as a symbols of hope for Black girls to flourish, the project seeks to collect 750 images, forming a vibrant archive of Black girlhood across generations. Together, these photographs will become part of a final artwork by Clark that will debut in 2028 as part of an upcoming exhibition. To participate, send one photo of yourself between the ages of 9 and 11 via DM to @marigirlsproject, or visit the link in the bio. #SonyaClark #IndigoArtsAlliance #ToniMorrison - Photo by Deborah Feingold/Corbis Via Getty Images

Greetings from baby Niama! ☺️ Thank you to artist Sonya Clark (@sysclark) for accepting and adorning one of very few images I have of myself as a budding tweenager for the Marigirls Project! 🙏🏿 In partnership with Indigo Arts Alliance (@indigoartsalliance), Clark is inviting Black female-identifying individuals to contribute a photo of themselves aged 9-11. Her goal is to collect and adorn 500-750 pics of Black women as girls to be displayed in her 2028 exhibition at Indigo! Some months ago, I submitted the picture and forgot all about it! What a pleasure to receive the picture back last week as I have been reflecting and pushing forward! This project is based on the 9- to 11-year-old characters (Freida, Pecola, and Claudia) in Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye,” featuring her use of marigolds as a symbol of Black girls thriving. The project reflects how Black women thrive on and continue to do so. Despite it ALL, we blossom again and again.” I can’t wait to see the installation with everyone’s photos all together! Learn more on the project and how to submit your photo at @marigirlsproject! ABOUT THE PICTURE: Brooklyn, NY. The year was 1995. True story: I was 9 years old, and on the verge of the rest of my life! It was my first day attending a new school, Philippa Schuyler Middle School for the Gifted & Talented, in a neighborhood all the way across the borough. Legitimately, I think about the school as one of many Black versions of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters…Hogwarts even! IYKYK 🤣 You see the tissue in my hand? I had spent some part of that morning before going to school crying, anxious and unsure of what lie ahead. It was my first time going more than a few blocks away to school. In many ways, going to Schuyler opened the world to me and put me on the path to who I have been and who I am still becoming. Shout out to Adrianne & Jeanine who were my best friends back then! One of their mothers’ (I don’t remember which now) told mine about the test. We all took it on a Saturday in 1994, and, as they say, the rest is history! ❤️‍🔥
