This mural for @yycbump is a reflection of my Korean heritage and my connection to the land I call home in Canada.

At the heart of the mural is Yong, a Korean dragon who dwells beneath the water and guards Yonggung, the underwater palace. I imagine Yong simmering quietly beneath the surface, gathering energy and waiting for the moment to surge. For me, that surge represents the meeting of my Korean heritage with Canadian culture and nature, embodied by the two rainbow trout swimming alongside Yong.

It was such a fun and rewarding experience developing this design with @marigoldasantos and @saidokins . Thank you both for being part of this process!

And a huge thank you to the entire BUMP team for making this festival happen. A special shout-out to @kat_simmers for working so hard to bring this mural to life. So grateful to be part of it! ❤️

Marigold Santos was born in Manila, Philippines, and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1988. She pursues an interdisciplinary art practice that includes painting, drawing, sculpture, tattoo, and sound.
Her work examines notions of heritage and cultural identity, folklore, motherwork, and decolonization, and are presented within the otherworldly. Her paintings, drawings, sculptures, and tattoo work explore self-hood and identity that embraces multiplicity, fragmentation and empowerment, as informed by diasporic experiences.

This is such a fabulous work 💙

Artist @marigoldasantos paints identity as something that’s never quite finished forming 🌿

Born in the Philippines, raised in Canada from the late 1980s onward, Santos has spent her practice exploring what it means to exist between cultures.

Her new piece “shroud”, shows a figure covered in holes and lines, with strange flowers growing out of where her nipples should be. The background doesn’t show anything specific. You don’t see ground and no sky for example.

But still it looks familiar. The figure is solid, but also like she’s changing. The lines across her body are like layers of memory and strength, with the flowers picking up what’s happening outside and pulling it inward.

“Recently, I started developing many spots and bumps on different parts of my body, which has made me very worried about my health. 💔
I had some blood tests done, and they showed high cholesterol and high blood sugar levels, so I went back to the doctor to check on my condition.
The doctor told me to take cholesterol medication for two months and then come back for a follow-up and repeat the tests. He also asked me to have a thyroid test to better understand what may be causing these problems.
But the cost of the medication and medical tests is very difficult for me to afford, especially in the difficult circumstances I am living through. 😔
I just want to receive the treatment I need and feel reassured about my health.
If you can help me, even with a small donation, or simply share my story, it would mean so much to me. 🙏🤍
Please keep me in your prayers.”
