Ia Manatua

Solo exhibition for Mylee Etuale

Opening Saturday, October 3, 2026
3-5pm

Ia Manatua is a Samoan phrase which can be translated as to remember, or to recall. It incorporates a Samoan concept for memory combining the term mana, meaning sacred power or spiritual energy, and tua, meaning back or support. The word ia calls manatua into presence, defines it as an act rather than an abstract concept, and positions it in a system of relationality. For Etuale, the practice of painting enacts the practice of memory. Her images are drawn from her own experience of returning to Samoa from her life in Southern California diaspora, welcomed in family, but also unfamiliar with so much of the language and lifeways that connect her to her ancestral home. Her paintings evince patient observation, joyful participation, and a sense of place, placement, and displacement which are at once vulnerable and assertive. The underlying images are made of photographic fragments, but the paintings emerge from a layered and resolutely manual process which unifies them into singularly resonant emotional chords. Her figures are intimate, but also turned away or partially hidden, sometimes cropped just beyond the edges of her canvases, so that what is given is more a feeling than a person. Similarly, her treatment of color and texture produce a dense generosity at the surface of her paintings which is also the result of a calculated withholding of the kinds of realism that offer up a picture in a single glance. Her paintings do not so much hold her memories as caress them into the present.

Help us welcome our 4th cohort of trained doulas on Guam!!! We’re so proud & honored to continue to expand the number of culturally relevant trained doulas on island 🎊

Last month changed a lot of plans & shifted our work to mainly post typhoon recovery efforts! But we recognized that with more climate & environmental disasters happening, more folks trained in perinatal health & support with an advocacy & rapid response lens continue to be important & an urgent need. We decided to go forward with our scheduled doula training & our doulas & community really came thru & supported!! 🥹💙

So much gratitude to our newly trained doulas for showing up & making this space what it was, to our Guam coordinator @gilaynajoy, all of our collective members who ran errands, supported, presented, etc, to all our guest presenters @fwcguam Saina B & Auntie Susan @opottunidat @earthstarholistichealth, & to @gimatanguma for leading our opening & closing ceremony.

Thank you/Dångkulu na Saina Ma’åse

🥰 Welcoming a new year of life filled with gratitude to have amazing family and friends around me. Whether we see each other in rare moments to text messages and calls or in person hangs, it all fills my cup. Feeling so loved by all the love 🥰

🙏🏽 Thank you God for the journey I’m on. I’m blessed to receive gifts disguised and apparent that You’re working in my life. May You continue to guide me and use me as a vessel to be a light for others.

✨ So many memories from the last year to share but here are a few with dear family and chosen family who keep me grounded and faithful. Thank you for the support with all the heart work I’m doing and also spending time with me when I’m in town visiting.

☀️ More to come especially from the adventures in the last year. To many more adventures in life coming up. Also here’s to more courage and care as I continue to be fully alive.
