What does it really mean to create change for the ocean? 🌊

Sometimes, it starts with something simple: curiosity.

In this YBE Expert Spotlight, we’re featuring @Fran Gonzalez , a marine biologist and ocean youth advocate from Chile, whose work connects marine science, ocean literacy, storytelling and collective action.

Fran’s perspective is a reminder that working for the ocean is not only about what we know — it’s also about how we share knowledge, connect with people and create action together.

From staying curious about our blue planet to turning science into stories and co-creating solutions, these are ideas worth carrying into our own Blue Economy journeys.

BOAT FELLOWSHIP 2026| WEEK 1

Under the theme “Our One Big Ocean: Currents, Geography and Biodiversity”,

Our BOAT Fellows in Training explored the Seven Ocean Literacy Principles and the connections that make our ocean one interconnected system.
Our Week 1 facilitators, @marinehadeer and @SedinamAmenutsuorVondee of @blue_economy_connect (BEC), brought a wave of expertise across Aquaculture, Coastal Governance and Social Resilience, helping fellows move beyond seeing the ocean as a distant body of water to understanding it as a foundation for Africa’s livelihoods, communities and economies.

From currents and geography to human connections, the session set the tone for what BOAT is about: building ocean knowledge that can travel from classrooms to communities and from knowledge to locally led action.

The ocean is one. Our responsibility is shared. 🌊

BOATFellowship is a UN Ocean Decade Endorsed Activity
