✨Meet The Cast of West Side Story✨

Marissa Pedersen as Velma

1. What is one thing you like and dislike about your character? My favorite thing about my character is just how she’s just so happy to be there with the Jets! She is so full of life, especially when she’s dancing, and that makes her so much fun to play.

2. What is your favorite number to perform in the show? My favorite number in the show to do is probably Dance at the Gym because of how amazing and iconic the
choreography is! I also love how it’s one of those
numbers where we all get to dance, connect, and have so much fun, and that makes it really special to perform.

3. What message hits you most from the show and why? The message I hope people take away from the show is that even when the world feels dark because of hate, cruelty, and division, love and hope still matter. This show reminds us how powerful love can be, but also how important it is to choose kindness, understanding, and compassion before it is too late.

4. Why should everyone come see “West Side Story”? Honestly there are so many reasons! The amount of hard work and dedication this cast and staff have given every single night, the crazy amount of talent that is up on that stage, and not to mention the AMAZING dance numbers you’ll get to see

On the 113th Anniversary of the sinking of the RMS TITANIC I’ve combined quite a few thoughts and experiences to express what an honor it was to be in @thespotlighttheatre ’s production of Titanic…

Some members of the community raised questions on our cast being “excited to celebrate a tragedy that struck the world.” However, as soon as we got our dressing room assignments the guys (Matthew Call, Julian Vandervelde , Antonio Casas, Andan Nguyen, Aaron BL) and I had really great conversation on that topic and our reaction was simple: this was our way of honoring and paying tribute to those who, in those moments did everything in their power to do what was right and handled this tragedy with respect and honor.

(Pardon my ego slipping through)

This spring was one of the most difficult seasons, personally and professionally, I’ve navigated in my entire life…sleeping most nights for less than an hour, working full days and then heading the theatre completely defeated, heartbroken and lost. It’s become the norm in today’s society to choose angry over compassion and kindness…it was heart warming to walk into a room of 45+ people and see smiles galore night after night. Some nights people lifting me up with kind words while I was on the verge of tears. Others quite literally picking me up off the floor in tears. Matthew Call approached me one night with a box that had an authentic 1912 pen in it. When I mentioned what a cool prop this was and how I needed to get one he said “This is for You. You had a tough week and You need a win.” This was not the only random act of kindness but one that caught me off guard the most. During this process I have had friends that I’ve grown closer with acquaintances become friends and strangers become friends.

The only thing I can possibly say is: I will never forget the kindness, compassion, encouragement and generosity shown from this cast/crew/staff and the way we chose to honor (with the greatest respect) the tragedy that happened 113 years ago as well as the way we’ve honored and supported each other through this process.

Three Cheers, Titanic
