On Thursday, October 1, the Hudson River Valley Institute (HRVI) welcomed Colonel (Ret.) James M. Johnson, PhD, to deliver the 2026 Handel-Krom Lecture in Hudson River Valley History. Speaking to an in-person and Zoom audience of nearly 200, Colonel Johnson reflected on his recently published book, “Key of America: Fortress West Point and the Highlands Department in the American Revolution.” Additionally, the talk featured highlights of ongoing efforts to preserve and restore the stonework of Revolutionary era fortifications at West Point.

Prior to the lecture, HRVI held a reception in Marist University’s Murray Student Center to welcome attendees and commemorate the 15th annual Handel-Krom Lecture. As part of the proceedings, Marist ROTC Program Coordinator Dave Rogers inducted Colonel Johnson into the Military Order of the Red Fox at the President’s Gold Level, only the second person to receive induction at the order’s highest tier. Accompanied by Captain David Marthy, an alumnus of the Marist ROTC program and former HRVI intern who is now teaching at the United States Military Academy, Rogers highlighted the many contributions made by Colonel Johnson to active military, veterans, and ROTC cadets since helping to reestablish the program at Marist in 2004.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in-person and online for the event!

A recording of Colonel Johnson’s presentation can now be viewed on HRVI’s YouTube channel.

The Bach’s are back! Please check out my release of Bach duet transcriptions added to the JAMS CD catalog. Many pieces from the Little Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach. I’ve been playing these selections at Marist for nearly 30 years in support of women’s achievements in early classical music. John Chocianowski engineered cd projects stem from my love of Bach inspired by mentor Dr. Edwin A. Ulrich and the art Colton Waugh
