‘Earthrise’— the second single off Howling World — is streaming everywhere today. Here’s the full video directed by my friend Marjorie LeWit @marjoriedirects

I’ve been trying to write this song for a long time. It started with the Earthrise photograph Bill Anders took during Apollo 8 in 1968, as Earth appeared above the lunar horizon. Anders later called it the “first real view of our home planet,” describing Earth as “very fragile and very delicate.” It was the first time humans had seen Earth rise above another world, and Anders’ photograph gave everyone else that view.

Somewhere along the way, that became tangled up with my obsession with Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (also 1968) and this imagined conversation about the film between the astronauts as they looked back at Earth.

Marge made the video using archival NASA footage and material drawn largely from Donald Fox’s 1970 public-domain experimental film ‘Omega.’ I’m very grateful to her for taking all of that strange, beautiful footage and making something that feels so completely connected to the song.

Kristen Drymala ( @kristendrymala ) plays cello and Miles Hewitt ( @mileshew ) plays bass. I’m really grateful to both of them for what they brought to it. Their playing gave the song a depth and warmth I couldn’t have gotten to on my own.

I’ve been carrying this song — and that framed picture — around for a while. I’m glad it finally gets to exist outside of me.

I don’t know what to say. Thank you so much to @thepfcat and the jury for this award. My very first as a writer. This was an unforgettable week full of new friends, old friends, and nature.

Thank you @kgwnews @hellorosecity for having @actordougjones and I on air to talk about our film! @prettyboysthefilm

By chance, I sat with @luciano_nick_ and @joyregullano on the plane after a layover and discovered we were going to the same fest. Their film @teseguireshortfilm was one of my favorites of the year.

I also reconnected with one of my favorite people in the whole world @marjoriedirects who cast me in my very first play in Los Angeles many years ago. She bought the most ridiculous earrings I’ve ever seen and made me laugh harder than I have all year. And of course, her short film @ohdeerfilm is hilarious. I knew it would be.

Congrats @milat00nz on your win and to all of the incredible staff and interns I met who made my time at the fest so special! Thank you to this wonderful fest and city for one of the best weeks of my life!

April 2025. Developing the intricate mythology of a 3-minute deer short. Still convinced this was a perfectly reasonable amount of Post-Its.

Next week is @tootsiesvideovault! Last year was a blast, and we won a couple awards. Two of our team members (@barlbonway & @ryangarretson) directed shorts for this year’s edition, and rumor has it some of our cast will be making appearances as well, so come out to @littlefieldnyc next Saturday, June 6 and experience the fest that started it all.

OH, DEER took Coney Island. 🦌🎡 A truly surreal weekend of mermaids, sideshows, fake Marjories, enthusiastic crowds, and one very fun Q&A. Huge thanks to Coney Island Film Festival for having us!

One year ago, we said “let’s just make the weird deer movie.” Somehow, against all odds, the deer is still wreaking havoc. 🦌✨
