Midlife healthcare isn’t equal. In the U.S., medical issues affecting men get twice the funding of those impacting women. That means women face more barriers to diagnosis, treatment, and research—just when they need it most.

The disparity exists for several reasons, including:
Historical Bias in Medical Research – For decades, clinical trials primarily studied men, assuming results would apply to women. This has led to gaps in understanding women’s health, especially in midlife conditions like menopause and autoimmune diseases.
Underrepresentation in Research Funding – Women’s health issues, particularly those not related to reproduction, receive less federal and private funding. For example, heart disease is the leading cause of death in women, yet it’s studied more in men.
The “Bikini Medicine” Approach – Historically, women’s health research focused mainly on reproductive health (pregnancy, fertility, etc.), while other conditions affecting women in midlife—like osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, and autoimmune diseases—have been underfunded.
Gender Bias in Diagnosis & Treatment – Women’s symptoms are often dismissed or misdiagnosed. Conditions like heart disease, pain disorders, and even mental health issues present differently in women but are often treated based on male-centered models.
Economic & Policy Gaps – Women are more likely to be caregivers and may delay their own healthcare. Additionally, workplace policies often don’t accommodate midlife health concerns like menopause, making it harder for women to prioritize their health.

These disparities impact women’s quality of life, longevity, and healthcare costs. Raising awareness and pushing for more equitable research and funding is key to closing the gap. #HealthcareEquity #MidLifeHealth #Menopause #Wellness #Health #HormoneBalancing #HormoneReplacement #ChapelHill #ChapelHillWellnessCollective

I took our entertainment center and rebuilt it. I took shrunk the size down and removed the built-in bookcases that were connect on the sides. These boards are from the coop on the backside of my grandparents barn. We tore it down 20 years ago. These boards are over 120 years old. I still need to clear coat it to protect the surface. #reallifemaker #reallifemakerspace
