“Dearest people,

A flood of emails for Bandcamp Friday!
Here's another pebble for the dam —
This is the tape I was performing on several occasions this summer, but do check out the whole albums too! Still in Portugal, more news later when the noise settles.

Hugs,

Manja”

At 7pm this evening - Manja Ristić and Mark Vernon bring us a haunting electroacoustic journey built from Belgrade’s forgotten sonic debris in ‘Volim Beograd’.

At the heart of this soniferous exploration are found tapes salvaged from flea markets, carefully interwoven with field recordings made between 2004 and 2024 and processed on the legendary EMS Synthi 100 at the Electronic Studio of Radio Belgrade. From this unlikely conjunction, sombre compositional structures emerge. Abandoned sonic relics are transformed into living memory, and fragments of lives on the brink of oblivion become an intimate portrait of a city shaped by upheaval, resilience, and tenderness.

Voices recovered from answering machines, dictaphones, and reel-to-reels surface as pockets of the past, echoing the chaos of lives in their unstoppable flow. Together, they draw listeners into a time-bending archaeology of sound, history, and human presence - set against the post-war vacuum of a society deeply submerged in depleted and corrupted values.

This is a radio version of the USB / book release on Kamizdat earlier this year:

Today’s commission at midday comes from The Radiophrenic Workshop – Radiophrenia’s own in-house production team.

‘Thalassonic Dynamo’ is a radio play that takes a deep dive into the secretive and murky world of maritime engine audio clubs – where enthusiasts share and swap rare engine recordings as if they were illegal contraband. And for some the obsession goes too far…

The piece was produced during a week-long residency at WORM, Rotterdam as part of the Radiophrenia/WORM residency exchange programme. It was first performed live as part of Radio WORM’s 25-hour live radio marathon in January and then at Glasgow’s Glad Café in July this year.

At 10am Mark Vernon revisits the Derby Tape Recording Club to trace a family of club members who emigrated to Australia in the 1960s.

“This programme is a continuation of sorts of a series I produced for Resonance FM back in the year 2002. Each episode was haphazardly constructed from a ramshackle archive of disintegrating open reel tapes bought from a car boot sale in Derby.

This lost episode of The Derby Tape Recording Club came about when a whole new batch of tape recordings were discovered 10 years ago. Martin Stanway, a former member of the club and son of Alf Stanway, the club chairman sent a selection of these recordings that were featured on local station Radio Derby over the course of a week. When I heard about this I of course got in touch and struck up a correspondence. Martin has since generously shared with me all of the recordings he had digitised along with photographs and other ephemera.

Martin and his family emigrated to Australia in 1969 leaving their friends in the club behind but they still kept in touch through taped messages, some of which are included in this piece.”

I’ll perform my new piece ‘The Wireless Dummy’ live on air as part of @radiophreniaglasgow ‘s two week programme of 24hr broadcasts on Monday 7th September 2026 from 5pm until 5:30pm.

“In this semi-improvised in-studio performance, concerning long and short-term memory, disembodied voices, and the history of ventriloquism, Robertson will ponder his own personal experiences as a partially deaf artist living with ADHD and PTSD, and the ongoing, and frequently infuriating, experience of attempting to care for an ailing relative remotely. Serious themes, but delivered with humour and musicality of sorts.”

Kindness may look like weakness,
Only if you’re complacent.
Kindness isn’t a weakness to me,
It’s part of what’s lost
It’s one of the many things a person will never forget,
Once they’ve pushed too far,
Repeated their immoralities.
And finally face that even the kindest people can set boundaries,
Once they find a way to love themselves enough.
To realise they are only hurting themselves through this “kindness”.

It takes enough self destruction for a kind person to claw through their skin to find an ounce of courage to set boundaries, stand up, and leave.

But when it happens, I hope you know,
Self destruction in the name of kindness,
Is violence and a disservice.
Show some true kindness.
Turn that kindness inwards.
Be kind to the kindest person you know.
Be kind to yourself. 🤍
