Graduation! Not mine, but my son, from high school. What watch do you wear? Many options, and there is no "right one," but I don't wear a suit often, and thought the November 2019 California dial watch from Timex Japan would look great. Bit more on the watch below, but it was a very joyous occasion today. More than I expected it to be, somehow. But looking back, I have had three graduations: high school, university, and medical school. And tbh the one that somehow meant the most to me at the time, and felt the most joyous and almost triumphant, was not the higher levels of achievement, but it was just graduating from high school. Maybe because that's such a "moment" in life, a culmination of a lot, and a crossing into another territory, or stage in life. While completing university and professional schools, while great accomplishments, just didn't feel as "momentous." Or emotional. But I felt that all over again today, but for him, and it was truly joyous. Because none of this is easy or without challenges, I'm sure even more so now than when I was a kid. So much bs, sometimes, tbh. But he managed through it all with grace, humor, and dignity. Well done, kid, good job. And all the best, from here on.
.
The watch looked great with the black suit. A quartz model with cream color dial, "California" Roman and Arabic numerals, cafe au lait color hands, and a simple leather strap. I think it was really fitting to the occasion. A really kind gift from friends at @timex_tokyo , thanks again! More at my review, including photos of the black dial one. Type in bit.ly/timexcali

Certainly not the greatest aurora borealis photo, but against odds I saw it! Missed it Friday night, so had hopes for Saturday. People said between 10pm-12, and maybe 2-4 am. So I bundled up, and sat my ass down on a deck chair on my roof and kept an eye out for anything. No aurora. I did see the ISS zip by, as the night was clear (photo 6 that white dot haha). Anyway, it was getting cold, and the various hashtags I periodically checked were all just hopefull people, no local sightings. I had to work early Sunday and needed rest at some point, so I thought maybe it's not gonna happen. Then I checked Twitter hashtags *one* more time before going to bed, and suddenly there were a few -- maybe only 2 or 3 -- people who were like I'M SEEING IT NOW, GO OUT NOW. They all seemed to be by the lake. I wasn't. But I turned my gaze south from my roof, and there it was. Couldn't believe it. Was mostly stable looking, not that much of the dancing stuff, but it was 100% legit. Called the family up to see, and by the time they got up, it lasted *90 seconds* more, then faded away. Gone. This pic is the best I got. (The last frame was my first pic, I was so excited it was all blurry). Green with a small patch of higher altitude red (see charts attached for color explanations.)
.
Those sort of "polar maps" (frames 3-4) show the "aurora oval," that apparently retreated very quickly on Saturday night, for some reason. The pic labeled 1 is earlier, and 2 is two hours later. It wasnt seen as widely or for as long as on Friday night, it seems
.
I saw the aurora once before, in 2001 or so, northen Wisconsin, while driving. Got out, watched. Took pics with a primitive digital cam (Sony Cybershot DSC-70) but nothing turned out. Nobody believed me.
.
Will be on the lookout tonight, but just glad I saw it yesterday, and lucky as I almost gave up and missed it right outside my rooftop.

Fluorescent glass! This Timex watch has a glass that glows under UV light. I found this out accidentally, and checked a dozen or so other watches, and so far I haven't found any others like this so far, though I'm sure there will be. The UV source is a fairly weak handheld device. The room was almost pitch black, nothing else in the field fluoresced aside from the glass. According to the Corning Museum of Glass, elements commonly present in fluorescent glass include manganese, lead, antimony, and uranium. (Not that I expected the glass to be radioactive, but I checked it with a counter, and it was not). But it definitely is fluorescent, with the glass giving off a whitish glow upon interacting with the UV photons. It also makes the glass appear a bit cloudy.
.
The fluorescent natuere here is a curiosity, adds no benefit to the ordinary user experience, and appears likely as an artifact of whatever was used to dope the glass to confer some desired property or properties (hardness, scratch resistant, break resistance, anti reflection, or something else.) Like maybe manganese was added. Just guessing.
.
Remember, fluorescence occurs when a *new* light is generated after the first light interacts with the material. The fluorescent material very briefly absorbs the UV light (or other generally higher energy light) and then as it relaxes back to ground state, it gives back its absorbed energy in the form of light. It's not a reflection, but a new light that is generated.
.
Even in ordinary white light, fluorescent materials just look brighter, as your eye sees not only reflected light, as you would see with a non fluorescent material, but the added new light that gets generated. So these objects just look bright, often intense.
.

I didn't get any photos of "chicagohenge," but here is a sunlit sculpted figure along the entrance of Ida Noyes Hall at the University of Chicago about half hour before sunset tonight.
.
Chicago streets are built on a formal E-W / N-S grid. Because of this alignment, at the vernal equinox, there are many E-W avenues that are well-suited for viewing the setting sun unobstructed by buildings as it sets "in the middle of the road." Tonight was the most perfect night for that, though yesterday and tomorrow also work fairly well. The most dramatic views (if you like that) are along certain downtown streets where the setting sun is bounded by canyons of skyscrapers, but some of the photos I've enjoyed the most are along humble neighborhoods of rowhouses and bungalows. Search on the various medias, and you'll find great pics from tonight. Maybe next year I'll see it!
.
Many of these buildings at the University of Chicago were built in the 1910s and 1920s in an architectural style not at all typical for the emerging Modernism of the time, but more in a Gothic Revival style which (I believe) was with the desire to look like Oxbridge and/or maybe certain legacy East Coast universities. There may actually be a greater concentration of gargoyles on this campus than at any other specific location the US!
.
Always enjoy any chance to visit Hyde Park and this campus. (I did not go to this university. I mean, please, did you not even see my high school transcript? Or: HAVE YOU SEEN JUNIOR'S GRADES)

Haven't wore the MECHANICAL Timex MK1 Camper in a while, but have had it on the wrist for almost a week now. The first mechanical hand-wound Timex in the Camper line since the 1990s, it was released Spring of 2020. Really lovely model with a matte green dial, nice dial elements and hands, steel case, glass crystal, and an engraved caseback with a good design. I've got it on a pretty old vintage fabric strap that seems to go alright. A very nice gift, thanks again @g.galli @andreagirola

If you like thinner pizzas, try to find New Haven style pizza. Baked in a very hot oven, the crust comes out very crispy. (Which should be a natural deterrent to someone actually trying to *fold* a piece of pizza). But it's more than the crust. It's less cheesey, and therefore less greasy, and feels "drier' than most pizzas in a kind of welcoming way. I do like NYC pizza, and both are variations of Neapolitan pizza, but New Haven in my opinion is substantially more satisfying (and by that I don't mean "more filling," but just an overall more enjoyable pizza-eating experience.)
.
This was my pizza, jalapeno and caramelized onions. It was the lunchtime personal pizza option. I only ate half, and took the rest home to reheat for later. I could have finished it, but I was honestly good after those two pieces (it was cut into quadrants). At Piece Pizza and Brewery on North Avenue.

Wearing today the March 2022 TIMEX x END. T80 "Everyday" digital watch 34 mm, a modern homage to TIMEX digital watches from the early 1980s. There have been numerous versions, and this one is classic in silvertone, with subtle END. branding, on the caseback, clasp, and also seen when activating the INDIGLO.
.
It wears more substantial than you might expect for 34 mm, and is fitted to a tapered adjustable-clasp steel bracelet. As you would expect, beyond timekeeping, the functions include day/date/month, alarm, and stopwatch. Iridescent screen sometimes grey, sometimes green, depending on viewing position and ambient light.
.
Came in a nice white box with TIMEX and END. branding, who have been great partners in bringing several exclusive collaboration watches, and END has been a stockist of many select TIMEX models over the years.
.
This watch was a gift from @endclothing, for which I'm super grateful, thanks again!
.
Loving the nostalgic vibes! Check out various other versions of the T80!

Wearing the last couple of days the "episode 2" of the recent Timex x secondeseconde "iykyk" M79 automatic. With paintings by Roy Lichtenstein as a backdrop, because obviously.
.
The M79 auto is an attractive, robust, and reliable watch, and add the bespoke seconds "hand" sound effect bubble and you've got a fun and unique Timex.
.
And the last pic, Cesar Romero? IF YOU KNOW, YOU KN

Came across a really nice vintage sign tonight, in Skokie, Illinois. The Charcoal Oven Cocktails and Fine Dining on Golf Road. Sign is in excellent condition. Love the green. Love seeing these working survivors. They are so noble.
