‘Beneath the Surface’ at Home of the Arts 2/2

If the first half of ‘Beneath the Surface’ celebrates water as a life-giving force, the latter reminds us that water also carries fragility, loss, and transformation. Here, rivers become sites of environmental anxiety, bodies dissolve into landscapes, and materials themselves begin to mimic the movement of water.

Mary Elizabeth Barron’s ‘Nerang River Lace’ cascades from the ceiling like a waterfall. The installation appears almost impossibly delicate, yet what initially resembles lace has been painstakingly constructed from recycled single-use plastics collected during the gallery’s own construction. The work transforms pollution into something unexpectedly beautiful without allowing viewers to forget its origins. Shadows ripple across the walls like flowing water, while the plastic itself recalls shed snakeskin, fish scales, river currents, and fragile aquatic ecosystems threatened by the very materials from which the work is made.

Honey Long and Prue Stent’s ‘Salt Pool’ presents a figure lying motionless within a vivid pink salt lake, suspended somewhere between emergence and disappearance. Wrapped in translucent fabric, the body appears simultaneously protected and vulnerable, as though slowly being absorbed into the landscape itself. The photograph transforms the salt lake into a place of ritual, stillness, and quiet transformation.

Throughout ‘Beneath the Surface’, water emerges as far more than a natural resource; it remains in constant transformation. It reflects, conceals, erodes, nourishes, and remembers. It becomes an archive of memory, a bearer of stories, and a force that continually shapes the Australian landscape and those who inhabit it.

Whether encountered as rainforest creek, Dreaming, photograph, installation, or recycled plastic, it reminds us that every river carries more than water alone. It carries histories, responsibilities, and futures that remain deeply interconnected. Looking beneath the surface reveals not only water itself, but the countless relationships flowing through it.

‘Beneath the Surface’ at Home of the Arts 1/2

Water refuses to be confined. It shifts between river and cloud, rain and mist, flood and reflection. It erodes mountains, nourishes forests, shapes memory, and carries stories far older than ourselves. ‘Beneath the Surface’ embraces this fluidity, bringing together historical and contemporary Australian artists who reveal water not simply as a landscape feature, but as a living force that connects culture, Country, ecology, and identity.

Moving through the exhibition feels like following the course of a river. Landscapes unfold beside abstractions, intimate reflections beside monumental vistas, each work offering a different understanding of what water can hold. Rather than presenting a singular narrative, the exhibition suggests that water exists simultaneously as physical reality and cultural memory.

William Robinson’s ‘The Rainforest’ seems almost to fold in upon itself as waterfalls tumble through dense vegetation and trees twist into improbable rhythms. Perspective becomes unstable, as though the landscape refuses to be viewed from one fixed position. The work captures nature as something constantly in motion, where growth, gravity, and water continually reshape one another.

Lin Onus’ ‘Reflections (Barmah Forest)’ similarly dissolves distinctions between above and below. Trees, sunlight, fish, and aquatic plants occupy the same shimmering surface, where reflections become inseparable from what lies beneath. Water operates as both mirror and threshold, connecting sky, Country, and the unseen worlds below.

Judy Napangardi Watson’s ‘Mina Mina Dreaming’ evokes the ancestral movements of water, expressing it as knowledge, ceremony, and continuing cultural connection, reminding viewers that waterways hold histories extending far beyond the visible.

Byron Coathup’s industrial installation uses scaffolding, fluorescent light, printed mesh, and construction materials, reminding us that waterways are increasingly shaped by labour, development, tourism, and consumption—where nature and industry become impossible to separate.
