I first discovered Wall of Sound when it was in Belltown. From that very first visit, I knew I had found my record store. Mark Sullo (Boston!)and Eric Hoffman created something unlike anything I’d ever experienced, and when Jeffrey Taylor and Michael Ohlenroth took the reins, they didn’t just preserve that vision—they expanded it. Long before streaming, long before downloads, before an algorithm could suggest your next favorite artist, places like Wall of Sound were how you discovered music. If you wanted the newest release from an obscure African label, a Japanese noise record, Ethiopian jazz, free improvisation, experimental electronics, folk traditions, or some impossible-to-find CD from halfway around the world, you went to Wall of Sound. The people behind the counter weren’t salespeople, they were guides, curators, and fellow obsessives who genuinely loved the endless possibilities of music. Wall of Sound became one of the reasons I decided to stay in Seattle. Walking through those doors, I realized this city was filled with people who believed music could be adventurous, global, challenging, and deeply human. Many of the records and CDs I discovered there found their way into my DJ sets in clubs, onto the airwaves at KEXP, and ultimately into the philosophy that guides SAMA today. The ripple effect of that tiny store is immeasurable. It shaped not only countless music collections but also the way many of us thought about listening, sharing, and building community through sound. As Wall of Sound closes after 36 extraordinary years, Seattle isn’t just losing a record store. It’s losing one of its great cultural institutions. Thank you, Mark, Eric, Jeffrey, Michael, and everyone who made that little shop feel like the center of a much bigger musical universe. Your influence will keep echoing every time one of us drops the needle on a record we never would have found without you.

REPOST from @Flotation_Device_KBCS: New music for violin and percussion comes to the Northwest as we preview @EmeraldCityMusic’s upcoming premiere of works by Vivian Fung, Gabriella Smith and Joan Tower. A Lou Harrison cameo illustrates the origins of this ensemble type, while @ConradTao helps us preview his appearance at @SeattleSymphony's In Recital series with works by Ravel and David Fulmer. Some new and historical recordings of compositions by Philip Glass, Bernhard Lang, Gérard Grisey and Marcin Stańczyk illustrate the origins and ongoing influence of minimalism and spectralism, while Seattleites Marc Barreca and Kerry Leimer demonstrate dark ambient’s affinity for both those movements. And we salute Robert Millis for his 60th birthday, Seymour Shifrin for his 100th, and Pierre Schaeffer’s final canonical work, Le Trièdre Fertile, for its 50th. Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Michael Schell. Sunday, March 1, 10pm–Midnight PST (GMT -8), on 91.3 @KBCS Bellevue/Seattle/Tacoma (streaming at KBCS.FM). We are pleased to present "Collage Connections" in the windows of WUG -- recent collage work by Mark Sullo Opening reception Saturday September 14, 6:00 - 9:00p FREE! At The Grocery - 3001 21st Ave S, Seattle 98144 At the opening, Mark’s work will be accompanied by sound collage, music mixes, and multimedia projections provided by Jesse Paul Miller, Climax Golden Twins and Sublime Frequencies. The theme is visual collections and sonic connections. Mark’s process for creating this work is with an intricate blend of printed media from a variety of source materials. His technique is unusual, utilizing adhesive tape to lift the top layer of ink and paper substrate. Each resulting tissue thin paper piece brings an unpredictable shape which he then pastes in gradual succession as the composition unfolds until completion. Working with this chance aspect of weaving connections, an abstract and improvised visual unity ensues, suggestive of order within chaos. This show is on view at WUG Sep 14 - Oct 20. #seattleart #collage #beaconhillseattle #visualart @mark_sullo @jessepaulmiller @janetgalore
