A quiet homage to past lives and shared histories 🐎✨

In soft, muted tones, a woman and her horse are captured in stillness — a tender tribute to a family who once called Mark Tweedie's childhood home their own in the 1930s.

The title nods to the Carnarvon Horse and Pony Club (est. 1959), located just down the road on Johnston Street.

📍Now showing as part of The Good Life at Art Collective WA until 2 August.

A woman leans over a jetty, caught between stillness and memory 🌊

In his latest exhibition The Good Life, Mark Tweedie returns to his childhood home of Carnarvon 🏡, capturing quiet moments that blur the line between past and present.

Up next // Mark Tweedie: The Good Life • Opening Sat 28 June, 2–4pm

In The Good Life, Mark Tweedie journeys back to Carnarvon—the coastal town of his childhood—after more than 30 years away. Developed during a 2024 residency, this new series captures the textures of memory: sun-faded houses, salt-bitten signs, and the hazy tenderness of days long gone.

Drawing on old family photos, dreams and relics of small-town life, Tweedie paints with a quiet nostalgia that resists sentimentality. His scenes feel both specific and universal—snapshots of freedom, fragility and the soft ache of time passing.

📅 The exhibition continues until 2 August

I can’t believe it’s almost been a week since The Darling Portrait Prize Finalist Exhibition opened. Truly one of the most positive and affirming experiences I have had as an artist to date.

We were taken such good care of by @portraitau. It was so incredible meeting the team and my fellow exhibiting artists, some of whom I will be working with again collaboratively in the future.

Thank you to the Gallery, for @mummabearfoxandwren and Rick for coming to support me, to my framers @picframewarehouse for making me a such a beautiful frame, to my sitter @carlosbob who serves as a constant inspiration, to my best friend @shhhaylen for driving, supporting me, making me laugh and always making space for me and for @michaelsimmsart for his friendship and energy.

I can’t believe my work is hanging in the Portrait Gallery.

You can see The Darling Portrait Prize until October. There is also a link in my bio to vote for my work to win the People’s Choice Prize.

Mark Tweedie doesn’t start out with a pre-planned theme or visual narrative.

His insights and thoughts emerge during the process.

He recently exhibited solo and successfully at the Jan Murphy Gallery in Fortitude Valley, Queensland.

‘Vagabond Hearts’ introduced works of solitary figures.

People not at home, in isolated places. Where they don’t live. The wanderer.

Although it’s not entirely autobiographic, his art delivers insight into the thoughts and headspace that emerges in that all-consuming process.

The commitment and rigour of evolving a body of work.

In his JM Gallery artist statement, Mark writes that it’s “about my own longing for home that has deepened with age. The works have grown from my feelings about being disconnected, alone and in some ways nomadic”.

He’s moved around a bit. Shared home with many people when he lived in Sydney. And yet, consistent is an innate connection to the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions in WA, particularly coastal Carnarvon, his home when he was six years old.

There were journeys south to Bunbury in the school holidays.

And resonant memories of his Mum’s beloved Rod Stewart cassette ‘Vagabond Heart’.

Connections. Disconnections.

“When I reflect on home, I am taken back to my childhood... I've never kept a diary, but my paintings function as one. You can tell so much about me by looking closely at my work”.

In Sydney he worked with photographers and photography. Both provided insight into narrative and lighting. Photograph albums were thumbed through then and now.

“My work continues to pay homage to photography and its rightful position in the centre of the family mantlepiece. The candid nature of analogue photographs often presents a vulnerability to subjects that has been erased by the digital age”.

Some pieces are situated in places where his artist-in-residencies occurred – Esperance, Albany, Bridgetown, regional Australia.

Peripatetic yes, yet his themes are universal.
