First time visiting Avellana Art Gallery — and what a show.

“Nail Hole” is a beautiful concept.
A quiet mark left behind — not as damage, but as memory. Each work in the show feels like that: traces of where artists have been, and where they’re going next. There’s something honest in that… growth, doubt, and the act of building on what came before.

Really strong mix of emerging voices — thoughtful, personal, and full of intent.

Big congrats to friends and artists in the show — Joseph Fraylon, Mark Abaigar, Kimberly Fabregas, Kendall Collindon, Jett Osian — and to all the artists involved.

Super talented group. Go check it out.

Urgent Daydreams feels exactly right for this moment — a quiet reminder to slow down, pay attention, and let the work unfold on its own terms.

There’s something restrained and thoughtful about this show. It asks you to stop, look closely, and sit with what’s in front of you, without rushing to conclusions.

It’s especially good to see Jehu Sabado, Wika Nadera, Mark Abaigar, Janis Reyes, and Allyster (Aster) Arroza, along with all the artists in Urgent Daydreams.

Congratulations to all the artists involved, and to Modeka Creative Space for bringing together such a considered exhibition. Please support Filipino artists — show up, spend time, and if you can, take a work home.

Sometimes you need to see a show like this.

A group of up-and-coming artists — many still students — who organised their own exhibition. That alone takes courage. It’s gutsy and visceral. But what really stopped me was the standard and quality of the work. So many of these pieces feel like the beginning of something much bigger.

Chatting with each artist, you get a snapshot of where they’re headed — a glimpse of the future taking shape.

There’s real energy here. Passion. Care. Ambition. You can feel how much this matters to them.

I left feeling genuinely optimistic — like with a group this driven, anything is possible.

If something speaks to you, don’t hesitate — buy the work. Supporting artists at this stage can change everything.

Huge congratulations to all the artists involved. Please go see the show, spend time with the work, and show up for Filipino artists.

And finally, the setting matters. The show sits inside the Calvo Building, built in 1938 and designed by Fernando Ocampo. Once home to businesses, later occupied during the war, damaged in the Battle of Manila and restored soon after — it’s one of the few remaining early-20th-century buildings along Escolta. Seeing new voices and new ideas unfold inside a space with this much history makes the experience even more powerful.

If you’d like the catalogue or details on available works, ask here.

✨ Featured Works from Panimula ✨

In Panimula, artists grapple with beginnings—of form, of narrative, of becoming. Each work carries with it a confrontation with origins: how we take root, how we inherit, and how we imagine futures from fragments of memory and myth.

From the organic entanglements of Cholo Apostol, the cyclical terrains of Mark Abaigar, the sharp yet tender gazes of Joseph Biong, to the haunting introspections of Kenneth Villegas, and the surreal assemblages of Mark Tuason—the exhibition reveals how multiple artistic voices converge in acts of unfolding and initiation.

On its last day at Gravity Art Space, Panimula invites audiences to reflect on how every beginning carries the pulse of both continuity and change.

📍 Panimula is on view at Gravity Art Space, 1810 Mother Ignacia Ave., Quezon City.

Panimula is a beginning—where imagination takes root, form emerges, and voices first find shape before the world. The works reflect many faces of starting anew: observing the body and its signals, returning to memory and childhood symbols, walking through landscapes shaped by people and time, and searching for form within personal and collective experiences.

Each piece is like a seed—capable of rooting, growing, and bearing new meaning. Panimula is not only a first step but an ongoing process of becoming. Through diverse visions, the exhibition shows that beginnings need not follow one path. They can be quiet and contemplative, or bold and resolute. Each mark and detail is a statement: the choice to speak through art and leave an imprint in the present.

GAS extends its deepest gratitude to everyone who joined us at last night’s opening. Your presence and support gave life to the conversations, images, and sounds that filled the gallery.

Across six exhibitions, artists explored memory, history, intimacy, and the fragile yet powerful gestures that shape human experience. From subtle flickers of film and the quiet persistence of objects, to beginnings reclaimed, stories reframed, and worlds imagined—the shows together reflect on how art recalls, unsettles, and reorients the way we see and feel.

We are grateful to the artists, collaborators, and audience who continue to make GAS a space where these encounters happen. 🙏 Thank you very much!

All six exhibitions are now open and will run until September 12, 2025. We invite you to revisit, linger, and immerse in the works throughout the coming weeks.

Maari itong maging tahimik at mapanlikha, o masigla at matapang. Sa bawat marka at detalyeng inilaan, malinaw na ito ay paninindigan: ang pagpiling magsalita sa wika ng sining at mag-iwan ng bakas sa kasalukuyan.
