It's been a tough time, but we must celebrate our successes. Today I received a photo of the first printed edition of Afternoon Chai that was sold, which will support our Collective. Thank you to the person who bought it!! I heard they are very pleased. And thank you to Tony for wanting to sell the piece for our cause.

AFTERNOON CHAI / 2023

Archival print on Hahnemühle Photo Rag

Paper

130 cm x 57 cm

Edition of 20

20% of sales proceeds from this print go to 1834 Collective / 1834 Collective is an interdisciplinary art collective exploring the global histories and contemporary echoes of Indian indentureship. The Collective uses art to amplify and honour their community.

'Afternoon Chai' - inspired by William Hogarth's 'Assembly at Wanstead House' (1728-1731) - highlights historical links between Redbridge and the East India Company, which once dominated world trade. The work reimagines the ballroom scene from the original painting, featuring the aristocratic family engaged in tea drinking and card playing. Sir Josiah Child, 1st Baronet, who was Governor of the East India Company, bought the Wanstead estate in the 1670s. Using his wealth from colonial trade, he transformed the landscape and developed gardens. His son Richard built the grand Wanstead House on the estate, completed in 1722, now the site of Wanstead Golf Course and Wanstead Park.

It's been a busy few weeks with the highs and lows. Finally I get to share a high! This photograph captures myself and my good friend @lucasysh sorting out the vinyl for the exhibition moments after it had opened for the Opening celebration!

I know the weather is awful at the moment but if you do get a chance please go see it. I want to find out what people think and feel.

The work focuses on revisiting my family history and honouring those who have passed.

One particular piece that I'm proud of is the short film I worked on with @markallred
We worked through my father's film tapes and edited them. It's amazing how we managed to tell part of what he wanted to capture. If you do go please ask Tony @parallellondon for chair so you can sit and absorb it all in.

It's there until 11th November!

Parallel LDN together with Sabrina and Mark will donate 20% of the sales proceeds to We’re All Human (WAH) as their chosen organisation – a disabled-led organisation dedicated to advocating for disability justice and online accessibility.

Looked through some home videos from the 90s and recorded this clip from a trip to Mauritius. Music was/is pretty important there and most of my family enjoyed dancing, singing and playing instruments.

In this memory my oldest cousin was forced to start the party for all the rest of the kids.

This A.I image was created from a wedding photo I took of my cousin and his partner in Mauritius.

Image description: a Mauritian woman wearing a sari on a balcony. She is standing but looks down to the floor. Behind her is a palm tree and shadows of mountains in Mauritius. A man is sitting on a wooden chair on the left side of the frame. On both sides it looks like a curtain draped framing the image. The image looks black and white with a sepia tone and distressed texture.
