All things Blue Grit talk about how to show up your best - day to day. Much of the origin of the podcast was to help applicants prep and elevate, but what about active law enforcement and first responders? The original idea for this episode was to talk about SWAT selection, but the themes developed much more high-level and adaptable for anyone who wants to be their best.

This conversation with cognitive powerhouses Seb Lavoie and Mark Bouchard goes far beyond prepping for the highly competitive selection processes, but to how you solidify your abilities, reputation, and actual performance (so you can be the ideal cop you want to be - selection or not)! Listen, share, and review to help the show and our community!

Symposium 2025: Setting the Stage – Mental Health for First Responders was an unforgettable experience. Over two transformative days, we came together to listen, learn, and lead with empathy - creating a space rooted in truth, resilience, and shared responsibility.
Set in the serene surroundings of Iremia Lodge, the event brought together presenters and participants from across the country, all united by a deep commitment to improving the mental health and well-being of those who serve.
We are profoundly grateful to our presenters, who brought authenticity, wisdom, and vulnerability to the stage. Your voices were powerful. Your stories were moving. And your leadership inspired action.
Each of you played a key role in shaping conversations that matter - and your impact will ripple far beyond these few days. @kimmys444 Kim Nocita, Dustine Rodier, Pascal Rodier, Phil Cleroux, Norm Taylor, @farinasteve @markbouchard52, Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh, Dr. Garry Hawryluk, Lucie Tremblay, Commodore Daniel Bouchard, @kimmys444, Corrine Landreville, @_laurakloosterman_ - @badgeoflifecanada

Four years of sitting across from people brave enough to share some of the hardest parts of their story. Four years of showing up and saying the words we were never taught how to say.

We started with Mark Bouchard, an RCMP ERT tactical medic and author who cracked open what it really means to serve on the edge and survive what comes after, all while putting his efforts behind changing the cultural landscape. Then Jodie Baulkham who brought us into her world of unimaginable loss and the strength it took to rebuild after the on duty murder of her first husband, RCMP Cst Chris Worden. She didn’t just speak about grief. She showed us how to live while going through it. We welcomed former VAC Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor, talking mental health, Veterans affairs, and what’s still missing for those navigating injury and recovery.

In Episode 33, I flipped the mic sharing where we can begin when we don't know the steps ahead. Episode 34 was a raw and emotional one called “What They Won’t Say” - except this time, I did, bringing humanity to those who serve and are viewed as indestructible and dispensable.

Then came a series that changed everything: the six-part deep dive into blast exposure and brain injuries featuring Brendan Hynes, Shane Nedohin, and Justin MacPherson. Former JTF2 breachers, they spoke publicly about how repeated blast exposure impacted their bodies, brians, families, and identities. These weren’t just interviews. They were a reckoning and a truth long overdue.

I also had the honour of being a guest on The Atlas Institute’s Mind Beyond the Mission podcast with Laryssa Lamrock alongside guest-host and my brother-in-arms, Andrew Gough. Together, we shared what it’s like to navigate trauma, family life, and healing when the job is done but the impact isn’t.

I’m so grateful to every guest who trusted me. To every listener who hit play and paused to feel. And to the WY20 community - those of you who come back for every episode, for truth and connection - you are the reason this space exists.

Thank you for four years.
We’re not done.
The best is yet to come.

Manners evolve with us.
🧠 Manners aren’t just taught, they’re learned, adapted, and passed on.

Throughout life, our manners shift based on who we surround ourselves with and what we model for the next generation. The way we speak, listen, and treat others reflects both our experiences and the people in our circle.

✨ The truth:
✅ Your circle shapes you—manners adjust to the standards of those around us.
✅ Lifelong learning—we refine how we communicate and interact as we grow.
✅ Teaching the next generation—children learn what’s “right” by watching us.

Are your manners serving you and those around you well?

💡 The lesson? Be intentional. Choose circles that elevate you, and remember, your actions today shape tomorrow’s norms.

🔑 Your Action:
1️⃣ Audit your circle—are they reinforcing the values you want to live by?
2️⃣ Be mindful—your words and actions set an example, whether you realize it or not.
3️⃣ Keep learning—manners aren’t static, and growth never stops.

Strength isn’t just about what you can achieve alone, it’s about how you guide, support, and uplift those around you.

Mentorship isn’t about telling someone what to do; it’s about walking the path with them, sharing lessons through experience, and giving them the tools to grow beyond you.

Manners aren’t just about politeness; they show discipline, self-respect, and the understanding that how we treat others reflects who we truly are.

Brotherhood is built through trust, shared struggle, and the willingness to stand for those beside you, knowing they’d do the same.

These aren’t just ideas, they’re values I’ve had the privilege to explore with outstanding men on The Collective. Learning from those who live these principles daily has reinforced their importance in my own life. Move with intent, lead with humility, and always invest in the people around you. That’s where real strength is found.

Good manners, strong mind.
🧠 Mental health isn’t just in our heads, it’s in our actions.

Good manners aren’t just social niceties. They shape our mindset, our relationships, and our well-being. Gratitude, acceptance, and kindness, toward ourselves and others, directly impact our mental health.

✨ The truth:
✅ Gratitude rewires the brain for positivity and resilience.
✅ Acceptance reduces stress and helps us navigate life’s challenges.
✅ Kindness strengthens connections and builds a support system.

When we treat others with respect, we reinforce those values in ourselves. A strong, resilient mind starts with simple, daily choices.

💡 The lesson? Your words and actions shape your mental state. Choose wisely.

🔑 Your Action:
1️⃣ Practice gratitude—list three things you’re thankful for today.
2️⃣ Accept yourself—perfection isn’t required for progress.
3️⃣ Show kindness—one small act can shift someone’s entire day.
