Welcome to Guernica’s August–September 2026 issue.

This month, we consider the afterlives of our actions: the intimate and collective forces we set in motion, and the consequences that continue long after their origins have slipped from view. Across fiction, nonfiction, interviews, Global Spotlights, poetry, and criticism, these works move through motherhood, displacement, war, belief, inheritance, and ecological responsibility, asking what follows from our most intimate and collective decisions.

Across the issue, consequences do not arrive evenly, cleanly, or from the direction we expect. They return through the body, through history, through a mother’s love, a lost city, a brother’s death, a river, and a future still being made. What we set in motion outlives us, but so, perhaps, can what we set against it.

a special thank you to our loved ones for their love, support and well wishes. Another thank you to the folks we encoutered during the day. The little gifts, laughs and acts of kindness we encountered, really made it feel like the city celebrated with us. “A bird gets up every morning and sings its song. It does not wait to hear what other birds are singing, nor does it look to see if another bird is getting more notice. It knows its song innately and sings. This is nature: knowing your own song.”

Yesterday the skies cleared to welcome Michele Oka Doner’s shimmering Bird House, a new public art sculpture, to the lush Bayshore Park in Miami Beach. We were reminded of our visit with the Season Five commissioned artist, who, earlier in the month, so generously opened her storied home studio to our community in New York.

🫂 Deepest gratitude to Michele and Fred, and to all who traveled near and far to join us. This year’s New York program was presented in collaboration with @_commonthings_. Photography by the remarkable Christina Holmes (@chwhat).

Free and open to everyone, Bird House was stewarded by the Art in Public Places committee of Miami Beach. Shoutout to Oscar Rieveling, Danielle Bender and so many others who together brought this work to life.

Curating, for me, is an act of care ✨

As I continue to grow into my practice as an independent curator, my focus remains on creating conceptually rigorous exhibitions that elevate artists and make space for meaningful connection.

I feel grateful to have worked in close, collaborative dialogue with artists and cultural practitioners across projects such as “Yo vengo de todas partes y hacia todas partes voy” by Amanda Linares (@amandallinares), “A landscape longed for: The garden as disturbance” co-curated with Adler Guerrier (@adlerguerrier), and “Good Times,” Chris Friday’s (@chrisfriday.art) solo exhibition. Each has deeply shaped my thinking and brought a distinct sense of purpose and joy to this work.

That ongoing commitment now brings me to a project I’m especially proud to share: co-curating the South Florida Cultural Consortium (SFCC) (@soflculturalconsortium) exhibition at @mocanomi alongside Kimari Jackson (@kimjack).
Together, we’re working with 15 regional artists, building a space for both artistic exchange and community to gather, connect, and reflect 🌿

✨ The Ellies—Oolite Arts Awards: Celebrating the Foundation for What’s Next

Mark Fleuridor was born and raised in Miami, Florida. He explores storytelling through painting, quilting, and collage. Fleuridor received his BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2019. His work has been exhibited at the Untitled Art Fair, Future Fair, and Crisp-Ellert Art Museum. He has created public art projects at Quail Roost Transit Village and MSC Cruises, both located in Miami, Florida. Fleuridor was a recipient of the 2022 Knight Champion Award, the 2020 Oolite Arts Ellies Award, and the 2020 Red Bull Artist Grant. He has also completed artist residencies at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY; Art Omi in Ghent, NY; Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Aspen, CO; and Oxbow Artist Residency in Saugatuck, MI. Fleuridor has been a visiting lecturer at multiple institutions including Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) and Florida International University (FIU).
