Tracklist

A – Pokerbot – 8:11
B – Ring of Fire – 8:12

The record was released by Trapez Ltd in February 2007. The two-track configuration, catalogue number and running times are consistently documented.

About the Release

Ring of Fire is the B-side of Mark Henning’s Pokerbot 12”, and it is arguably the more immediately physical of the two tracks.

The record appeared during a particularly strong period for minimal techno, when producers were stripping club music down to highly detailed rhythmic structures while retaining considerable dancefloor impact.

Henning’s production on this release is a good example of that approach: the groove is tight and economical, but the track gradually accumulates layers of percussion, bass and electronic effects.

B-side – Ring of Fire

The opening of Ring of Fire is relatively restrained. The track then develops into a much more forceful groove.

Resident Advisor’s contemporary review specifically highlights:

* intricate glitches
* echoing snares
* doubled sub-bass
* chopped vocal elements
* distorted electronic textures
* reverb-heavy effects

The review describes the track as developing into a crunchy, dub-influenced construction before a distinctive one-note bassline appears in the drop.

That bassline is particularly important. It provides a simple but extremely effective focal point after the more fragmented opening section.

Mark Henning - Sick Note
Cynosure 026 - 2006

Mark for me is possibly one of the most recognisable and unique producers of UK minimal. His signature dark and weighty basslines, alongside intelligent sound design have made him one of my favourites for a long time. Most of Marks classics (Trojan, Chicago Sunrise etc) fetch some pretty healthy prices on discogs, but some of his deeper cuts are every bit as good in my opinion and can be picked up for a few quid usually when UK copies come available. One of those artists who is always an instant buy for me.

This was one that he released on Mike Shannon's label Cynosure which put out releases from some of my favourite artists of that era, Inc Mark, Brett Johnson, Adam Marshall and ofc Mike himself. Match made in heaven!
