A striking Universal Genève Uni-Compax, retailed by Türler circa 1950, housed in an oversize 37mm steel case. The dial is the true star here: grey dials are considerably scarcer than the black dials most commonly chased by collectors, and this example goes further still, presenting a two-tone grey with a naturally patinated white outer tachymetric scale. Adding to its significance is the double signature: Türler, the Swiss retailer based in Zürich, founded in 1883 by brothers César Alexander and Jean Henri Türler.
Sold by De Baecque et Associés for €1,300 in December 2015.

The World Cup just ended. And looking at this Uni-Compax dial, it's easy to jump to conclusions: a chronograph stamped Telesport, with a 45-minute counter. Surely a sports watch, right? Designed to time a half?

But if that were the case, you'd expect something to back it up. A steel case, screw-back, pump pushers; the hallmarks of a tool watch built for active use. Instead, no water resistance to speak of, technically identical in every way to a standard Uni-Compax. Whatever Telesport means here, it left no trace on the watch itself.

The first assumption was a retailer's signature on the dial. But there's no trace of any dealer by that name and curiously, the Telesport print appears consistently across the same two references only, which makes the retailer hypothesis increasingly hard to sustain.

Then this Italian advertisement surfaces and it reframes everything. Universal Genève appears to have positioned the Uni-Compax Telesport as a sports-targeted commercial edition, possibly bundled with an accident insurance policy through Le Assicurazioni d'Italia (I.N.A.), covering up to 2,000,000 lire. Not a technical upgrade, but a marketing package aimed at a specific audience of active sportsmen.

But even this reading isn't fully confirmed.

Some of the best Universal Genève "Contax" examples out there, the first wrist chronograph to feature an hour counter.
Made for a very short window between 1936 and 1938, the Contax hides a unique mechanism: the hour-recorder hand is linked to the hour wheel instead of the minute train, letting you, by pulling the crown while the chronograph runs, set a second time zone, a countdown or a memo function. Designed by Martel Watch and marketed by Universal Genève, it predates the better-known Compax, which carried on its legacy.
