SUSK Congress x UCC Advocacy Day 2026 in Ottawa 💙💛

Ukrainian Canadian Students Union (SUSK) and Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) have advocated for Ukraine and the Ukrainian Canadian diaspora for over 70 years now.

This May, Ukrainian Student Organizations from across Canada gathered in Ottawa to reflect on our shared experiences, learn more about each other, meet other community leaders, and connect to build a stronger network of active & involved youth. I attended the SUSK Congress @suskcongress and UCC Advocacy Day on behalf of @ubc_usu as its Immediate Past President, and I call on all active Ukrainians & allies to join UBC USU in the upcoming semesters to be a part of our community and advocate for Ukraine together.

At the Parliament, our teams met with different MPs to campaign for Ukraine and Ukrainians in Canada. The focus of our conversations was continued support for Ukraine, including joint defense production, private investment in Ukraine’s future, justice for abducted Ukrainian children, increased diplomatic pressure on russia such as the expulsion of russian diplomats, designation of russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and full trade embargo, as well as support for displaced Ukrainians in Canada facing uncertainty, such as a more defined and long-term pathway to PR via the CUAET program. We thanked the government of Canada for its continuous support of Ukraine, such as the recent allocation of an additional $270M via the NATO program PURL for Ukraine’s defense, and highlighted other critical ways in which Canada could support Ukrainians.

Visiting the House of Commons and taking an active part in advocacy for Ukraine at such a high level is one of the most impactful ways to contribute to Ukraine’s victory from abroad. I am forever humbled and grateful to @ukrcancongress and @susknational for this opportunity to represent my country ❤️‍🩹

I am also incredibly happy to have met with so many inspiring Ukrainian youth leaders from all over Ukraine and Canada, and I cannot wait for our future collaborations and continued work towards Ukrainian victory 🥹

Слава Україні! 🇺🇦

Man Behind the Camera is an EXCLUSIVE LIVE CINEMATIC CONCERT by Ukrainian-Canadian composer and pianist Taras Luka, featuring an original score performed to Man with a Movie Camera (1929), the landmark avant-garde film by Dziga Vertov. 🎬

The film was produced in Ukraine by All-Ukrainian Photo Cinema Administration (VUFKU) and filmed in Kyiv, Odesa, and Kharkiv, capturing the rhythm of modern city life through groundbreaking cinematic techniques. 🎬✨

In the Sight & Sound critics’ poll, it was ranked among the top ten greatest films of all time and later named the greatest documentary film ever made.

Created without actors, costumes, sets, or a traditional script, the film captures a single day in the life of a modern city. Vertov documents urban life through pure cinematic form, transforming everyday reality into a dynamic visual symphony through radical editing, rhythmic montage, and bold visual experimentation.

During the screening, Luka performs the score live on stage, transforming the film into a powerful immersive audiovisual experience where music and image unfold together in real time. 🎹✨
Taras Luka is an award-winning composer with an international career across Europe and North America, known for his work in theatre, film, and large-scale concert productions.
Man with a Movie Camera remains highly popular across Europe and is regularly presented at cinematheques and festivals, including programmes by the British Film Institute, the British Council, and the Ukrainian Institute. These screenings reflect the film’s lasting influence within European film culture.

Friends, fellow citizens!

Today, history presents us with a challenge we cannot ignore. Each of us is not a passive witness, but an active shaper of the future. The course of history depends on our actions. Every volunteer, every soldier on the front line, every person contributing to the defense of freedom — these are the people turning the tide of history.

We must show the world, and most importantly ourselves: force cannot conquer the idea of a people’s will. We must prove to the Russians that their aggression is powerless against the strength of spirit, the right to freedom, and the unstoppable idea of a nation that wants to live free.

The Western world today faces a choice. Will we allow tyranny to set the rules? Or will we unite for the sake of shared freedom, for a future where the value of life, human dignity, and the right to choose outweigh any weapon? The time of tyranny is ending. And we must be the force that stops it.

So act. Help. Fight. Be the voice and hand of change. History does not wait — it is made here and now. And we are the ones who decide what our freedom will be.

Freedom is worth every action. The idea of liberty is stronger than any weapon. And the unity of the world is our most powerful shield.

During Ukrainian Week 2026 in Washington, D.C., we gathered at the Taras Shevchenko Memorial to lay flowers as a sign of deep respect and remembrance for the Ukrainian people, who for centuries have fought for their freedom and independence.

Taras Shevchenko was one of those who became a powerful symbol of this struggle.

It was a moment of silence, prayer, and gratitude.
We remember every life, and we carry this memory in our hearts as we continue to tell the world the truth about Ukraine and the true cost of its freedom.
