What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Lodi?

Because there is the story we think we know about a place. And then there is the story you find when you start asking questions.

700+ growers. 90% of the vineyard acreage farmed by independent growers. 136 grape varieties. Old vines and new ideas. Families who have been farming here for generations alongside people experimenting with what Lodi can become.

Albariño. Garnacha Blanca. Cinsault from 125-year-old vines. Carbonic Tempranillo. Wines with brightness, nuance and freshness that made me stop and ask, tell me more.

And that may have been my favorite part of the day.

Not simply discovering wines, but discovering the people behind them. Growers, families and winemakers with stories that deserve to be heard.

Lodi was a day of surprise and delight. And a very good reminder of why I love this work: there is always another story waiting underneath the one we think we know.

Cheers to surprise and delight. And to discovering how much more there is to a place you thought you already knew. 🥂

A day of wine tasting in Lodi for their first annual Lodi Wine Showcase featuring 30 wineries pouring an array of wines from the most diverse region in California for grape varities. Perhaps Lodi is not on your radar. Perhaps you think you already know Lodi wines. But I can tell you that you might not as this a region to discover and explore with 136 different grape varieties, old vines, and lots of great winemakers.

Sometimes things are truly kismet…🤩 Okay, so starting from the beginning, Michael had heard about an event in Los Angeles called the @festivalofundiscoveredgrapes. Some of our favorite wineries were going to be there, and we absolutely love trying new and different varietals, so we were already down. 🙋‍♀️🙋🏻‍♂️

Our first wine of the day was the Markus “Nimmo.” This Lodi based winery makes this 2024 blend from Grüner Veltliner, Kerner, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gewürztraminer, and it is so freaking good! Tropical and stone fruits, with a touch of acidity. This is THE perfect summer wine! ☀️

We’ve opened a couple of bottles now, and have made a different charcuterie board each time to accompany it, since we are still trying to master the perfect composition. Honestly, we don’t mind the practice. 😉 But this wine! It’s delicious. With or without food, it’s awesome. 👏 👏👏

Anywho, call it fate or something. 🤷‍♀️🤷🏻‍♂️ In any event, we are happy campers discovering this summer perfection in a bottle. 💛

Neighbor Night at Americana House featuring Markus Wine Co.

Outstanding food, a beautifully aromatic 2025 Nativo Kerner( a Riesling x Schiava originating in Germany)with the compressed strawberry salad, and Old Vine Shiraz with our entrées(a bottle of each its way home with us).

One of the things I love most about Lodi? Sharing the experience with the owner and winemaker himself. That’s what makes this wine community so special.
