Though I AM WATER is all about water, ABL is an all encompassing qualification - gaining experiences on the mountain, in the garden on the water & in the water - a course that doesn't limit you to just one environment, but multiple - because let's face it... We need all of it for our planet to thrive 🌎🌊🏔️

Nothing beats that first breath after you break the surface of the water.

Beneath the waves, the world goes quiet. The cold wraps around you, the kelp sways, and for a moment you're so aware that you're moving inside something much older and bigger than you.

Then you rise through the water and feel the air fill your lungs. The sky is open. There's the taste of salt on your lips, there's the cold in your bones, and you're ever present with the simple joy of breathing. Your whole body remembers what it is to be alive.

Last week we hosted our first ever leadership camp with our Adventure-Based Learning trainees.

On top of guided hikes and swims, night-time walks, foraging and shared braai’s, they also completed their final practical assessments - the last stretch before they qualify to become lead facilitators!

We’re so proud of this incredible group of young leaders and the hard work they’ve put in this year.

These are the people that will soon be leading other young South Africans into their own relationship with nature and the ocean. We have no doubt they are ready! 🌊✨

August was full of fun and learning 🌊✨
Here are some of the highlights!

👉 We ran 4 school speaking series, reaching 505 learners
👉 We initiated 79 new River Guardians from two local primary schools
👉 We ran one Ocean Guardians workshop with 11 young budding conservationists
👉 Our ABL (Adventure-Based Learning) trainees went on leadership camp and finished their portfolios
👉 We went dragon-boating as a team!
👉 We ran a community snorkel on MPA Day and over 100 people came
👉 We ran an impact-driven storytelling masterclass at AFDA for their Honours students
👉 We attended the @sportforsocialchangenetwork Arise Women Symposium alongside other inspiring change-makers

We’re so grateful to our ocean-loving community for helping us continue the work we love.

Our most recent Ocean Guardians crew from Laerskool Paul Greyling didn’t get a gentle, sunny welcome to the ocean. They got grey skies, mist and freezing water - and some of them had never even put their face in water before!

They still went in anyway, and they came out shivering, grinning and dancing 🕺✨

Between rockpool explorations and snorkelling, we also got to discuss the issues facing our oceans - and what we can actually do about them, together.

We landed on one powerful takeaway: pick up any litter you see - it might not be your litter, but it’s your planet 🌍

Recently the I AM WATER team did an exciting experience exchange with @dhyclub 🐉

Ever heard of dragon boating? It’s a high-energy team water sport where 10 to 20 paddlers propel a long canoe-like boat 🚣🏽‍♀️

Our ABL (Adventure-Based Learning) group were lucky to be welcomed to the V&A Waterfront Marina for a three-hour team-building experience, where we learnt the call-outs and paddling techniques. We had DHY paddlers riding along with us to help us refine our form too! 🌊

This was a good example of what our Adventure-Based Learning programme is about: stepping out of your comfort zone, embracing challenges and learning through active engagement with outdoor activities.

We feel so lucky to have the Drachen Hari-Yoshi Dragon Boat Club give us this experience where we got to see these principles in action: resilience, teamwork and adaptability.

This October, DHY will represent South Africa at the first-ever international Dragon Boat championship in Africa, hosted in Uganda. Make sure you follow them to stay up to date with their journey.

Thanks again to the team who made this experience possible AND to our ABL team, who showed up with excitement and enthusiasm.

We’re still riding the high from MPA Day 🐋

Miller’s Point is one of those places that does all the work for us: lush kelp forests, cold clear water, life flourishing all around you - and on the day, we had a pod of whales cruise past us like they were celebrating MPA Day too!

We had over 100 people from all over show up and dive down to mark this important day. Even those who had never swum before ✨

What a privilege to witness the delight, the amazement and the desire to protect what we love 💙

Thank you @marineprotectedareasday for encouraging us all to remember why we need to protect our oceans.

What an incredible morning we had at Miller’s Point on MPA Day! 🌊✨

The water was flat, the visibility was clear and then, as if on cue, a pod of whales came past to say hello! We couldn’t have planned it to be any better. This is what Marine Protected Areas are for.

Thank you so much to the over 100 members of our community who came out from near and far to celebrate with us. We felt lucky to share our love of this particular MPA with other ocean advocates, as well as first-time swimmers and everyone in between.

We can’t wait to do it again. If you joined us, let us know what you thought of the day, we’d love to hear what you saw under the waves👇

No single organisation can protect the whole ocean - it’s too vast and the threats are too big. This is why we don’t try to do it alone.

Last week our team headed to Gansbaai to meet the people behind @marinedynamics @dyerict and @apssza - to learn about the work they do in their area and connect over what we both love: our big Blue! 🌊💙

We may be separate organisations working in different areas but we are a network of hands holding one shared vision of protecting the world we love and the many beautiful creatures in it.

We were amazed at every point at the care and dedication of the @marinedynamics @apssza and @dyerict teams. We got to speak to their marine biologists, their programme organisers and their staff about the work they are doing to protect the wildlife in the area. If you can, please go and support their efforts to save and protect the sharks, seals and penguins.
