Painting inspired by @saerows ‘s latest album Death in the business of Whaling

This is how I visualized some song lyrics throughout the album
For example “i loved you wrong in the sinking sun” from the song In Violet is interpreted as the good glass paint dripping from the “whale carcass”

While doing this painting i also did a deep dive in a lot of the albums visuals done by @marloweostara which is just exceptional to me !

Hope you guys enjoy the final result as much as i do and hopefully i summoned some Searows fans who will feel this as deeply as i did 💙

Thank you to everyone who supported me and @emrys.peacock artwork in our show “Last Summer” at the @vernonarts ! This residency was very special :) here are the pieces from my collection and artist statement 🌀

My collection focuses on liminal moments. Having just graduated high-school, this period is a huge transition from the security of structure in school to an open-ended future. In my pieces, I focus on the quiet unnoticed scenes during movement. The images I’ve illustrated are what you would see in between places. For example, cows in a field I saw while on a walk, a sunken sun-bleached tree while paddle boarding on the lake, or even power lines out the car window on a drive. All of these simple moments are often left unnoticed when our focus is on the destination. I wanted to show the detail and beauty in the things we often overlook.

Through my work, I’ve experimented with a variety of mediums, such as acrylic and oil paints, pencils, and linocut. I have worked on cardboard, paper, and canvas surfaces. I incorporated personal reference photos taken on my digital camera. My pallet involves muted tones of browns and blues, as well as pure white to create negative space. I eliminated the use of a grid for scale and worked straight from the image instead to create more organic scenes.

For this series, I was inspired by the albums Death in the Business of Whaling by Searows (@saerows ), and Preachers Daughter by Ethel Cain ( @mothercain ). They are both concept albums following fictional narratives. I was very intrigued by the idea of creating a story through my artwork the way those artists did in their music. I drew from the gothic styles in both albums. I aimed to showcase moments that aren’t automatically telling what the meaning is, but rather leave room for interpretation.
