I learned so much from this book. It should be compulsory testing for all Australian school children. If only all adults (myself included) were like Just-call-me-Carl. 5 stars. #deserttracks #aussiekidlit

A HUGE congratulations to Marly Wells and Linda Wells on winning the Ethel Turner Prize for Young People's Literature at the 2026 NSW Literary Awards for their book, 'Desert Tracks' (2025).

This is a snippet of what the judges said about this Daisy Utemorrah Award winning book:

"Desert Tracks was a stand-out for its understated ambition and elegant storytelling. The panel was excited by the genre-bending nature of its storytelling, which unapologetically blends fantasy, history and time travel as well as the device of ‘a book within a book’. The resulting narrative is rich and engaging, accessible and instructive."

Congratulations to Marly Wells and Linda Wells on winning the Ethel Turner Prize for Young People’s Literature (NSW Literary Awards)📚✨

It is wonderful to see a story set in Central Australia recognised in this way and we are thrilled for our local authors.

The winning entry was announced this evening, and while congratulations go to all the authors recognised across the different categories, we especially wanted to celebrate this fantastic achievement close to home. Sorry Linda I could not find a photo of you on my phone!

Australiana... the word conjures up a sun burnt country! Sweeping plains! Footy, farm life and being a fair-dinkum... something. But let's face it. That's a pretty out-of-date set of ideas. And these #loveozya reads tackle that head on, taking classic aspects of Australian mythos, and updating them for the 21st century.

As we quickly approach Book Week, a time to celebrate, elevate and promote local creatives, I'm proud to live in a country with so many talented storytellers!

Especially authors and illustrators from WA, or books released by West Australian publishing houses. I can't wait for our students to get their hands on these new books!

✨️SPECIAL EVENT ALERT✨️

Join us to celebrate the launch of Desert Tracks by Linda Wells and Marly Wells!

An in-conversation not to be missed, Desert Tracks is a time travelling novel about young people in central Australia, the historical legacy of racist policies and the relationship between history and the present.

Have you ever gotten lost in a book? Entranced into the world of a mysterious old story, Millie, a Warlpiri teenager, is sucked up by a willy willy and transported to Alice Springs in 1924. Here she meets a crew of oddly familiar young people, Sonny, Beryl and Spike. As the group continue to find each other in time, they realise the Alice Springs of the past and the future are not as different as they seem...

This event is free but bookings are essential. Reserve your spot via the link in bio.
