FILIPINOTOWN Streetcar Design Unveiling

MARAMING SALAMAT @devcabano @marmsipan @seattledot @kcmetrobus for your efforts to bring continued recognition to the many many MARAMING MARAMING contributions from our Filipino American community to the city of Seattle @cityofseattlegov , Martin Luther King County and the state of Washington

1883 the first known Filipino, Manilla, worked on Baibridge Island.

1898 Pensionado Act brought Filipino students to the study in the U.S. Many enrolled at the @uofwa

Fast forward to the 1930’s and @cidseattle was the destination for new Filipino immigrants and migrants. Unofficial Manilatown

Fast fast forward 2017 after an attempt to delete a reference to Filipinos from a city resolution honoring the neighborhood @devcabano lead the effort to oppose this deletion and to gain official designation from the @cityofseattlegov recognizing Filipinotown, a more inclusive term, as part of the Chinatown-International District.

This recent unveiling honors our history in Seattle/CID and celebrates the growing presence of Filipino Americans business owners, artists, activists and community members who have returned to the Chinatown International District

#Filipinotown Exists #Seattle /// today the diversity of the International District rolled into the future. My Uncle Pio asked “Where’s Bob?” during the speeches, forgetting momentarily that the champion of the district, Uncle Bob Santos, was with the ancestors. He has a building, and now a train car that reflects his vision of a beloved community. Gave a shout to Frank Irigon who was one of the first members of the FTS Coalition. For past solidarity we say thank you to our Viet friends @flsseattle , our Chinese American allies @ocagreaterseattle , the #FilAm brethren, our @prideasiaorg Queer supporters, friends of @SCIDPDA , @cidseattle , @hsdseattle , and the @cityofseattlegov @kcmetrobus @seattledot . We remembered our further past with #CarlosBulosan , Domingo & Viernes, even #JoseRizal for their marks on the city. Today we have bridges and buildings to their memories. It was a good day in the neighborhood. Since at least the 1950’s Seattle recognized an “International Community” here. About 8 years ago, what Uncle Bob called “Manila town” became something new as the Seattle City Council formally recognized [Filipinotown] through our #FilipinoAmerican coalition /// @interim_cda @fanhs_seattle @fanhs_national @fanhs_gps @fanhsgreaterpugetsound @filipinotown.magazine @filipinocommunityofseattle @support_ichs @acrsnews @wa_capaa @mihicarr @mikicarrbeauty #filipinoamerican #AANHPI #AAPI #AAPIHeritageMonth #AsianAmerican
